We are getting my 7 year-old son a pocketknife for Christmas. He wants a Swiss army knife? Is there anything I should know? Thanks in advance.

I'm 41 and still have my Swiss army knife from when I was 8-9. Don't go camping or hunting without it.

It's the huntsman model by victorinox, but it's a boy scout model, so no corkscrew. LINK

Get him a nice pocket knife for his "first knife" and then put it up and just take it out for him every now and then under supervision and give it to him when he demonstrates the responsibility to not loose it

buy him a cheap one for his "second knife" and give it to him and expect him to loose it shortly

Great knife for a first knife......that said, that joker will get wicked sharp and I'd supervise him pretty closely. Good on ya pop.

Other part is, IF he loses it, its not a $200 Benchmade that you'll be upset about. (and I like Benchmade)

I never lost my first knife. Had it ever since I stole it from my dad.

I agree with this. You can get him a nice one and take it to a trophy shop to get his name and the date put on the blade for a couple dollars. Then buy a 12-pack of cheap ones for him to lose for the next couple years until he gets the hang of not losing them.

I'm almost 40 and go through about 2 per year due to losing them. I usually find them right after I buy a new one though.

Can't go wrong with a Swiss Army knife. Cut myself a many a times as kid trying to close the blade without paying attention. Pain is temporary. Made me stronger.

Don't let him take it to school.

Tell him not to run his finger down the blade. That was the first thing I did when I got mine. With my super smart kid brain, I decided to check how sharp it was. It was sharp.

Eta: Kid's first pocket knife should always be a Swiss Army

bought my kid a case trapper for his first knife. He picked it out himself. I guess he was 5? Anyway, put it up in my room and only allowed hime to take it out to show people and then put it up. Couple years later and I'll let him wear it on his belt when we go hunting, but still forbid him from taking it out until I tell him to. He helped clean his first deer with it the other day.

FTR, he also has a small Swiss army knife he got for Christmas that I found in the basket rack of the 4 wheeler after a trip to the club and a small Gerber that is probably in the bottom of a. mud hole already.

Yep. The biggest one I ever got was the plain jane with like 10 tools. I always wanted the 100 n 1 or whatever they sold for like 5-10 years. Just never wanted to spend $100 on that thing.

I still remember the feeling when I opened my dad's locking Buck knife when I wasn't supposed to and panicked trying to close it. I got blood on every surface in his truck while he had run into the store for something. I think about it every time I leave my kids in the truck for a minute.

One year for Christmas, I must have be 10 or 11, my uncle got me a really nice Gerber lock-blade. I opened it, got it out of the package and within about 10 seconds I had cut the top of my first knuckle on my thumb. I'm sitting there in the middle of everyone in the extended family holding direct pressure on my thumb trying to make a scene. My uncle comes up to me and says, "Be careful with that knife. It will cut you...."

Swiss Army knife became obsolete when the ten in one tool came along. Might as well get him what he thinks he wants, though.

My dad bought me a Buck pocket knife when I was about 7 while we were in Colorado.

I sliced the shite out of my finger not 20 minutes later and dripped blood all over the back floor board of the rental Jeep. I was scared to say anything because I didn't want him to take it

I got a Swiss Army Tinker when I was about that age.

I still have it in a cigar box at my parents home. I carry a new one just like it when I wear slacks or khakis.

We got my son a camo Swiss Army knife at that same age. He is 9 now. Over this past weekend he was using it to cut out doors and windows in a big cordboard box we had.

Like with any knife/gun, teach him what he should do and not do.
