Crack head felon saw her walking her puppy. She went back upstairs into her apartment. 30 seconds later there’s a knock on the door. Her roommate was expecting a package so opens the door and he grabs her by the neck and comes in. Wiener dog puppy going nuts, wife runs to her room and grabs her gun and demands he let roommate go. He does, roommate calls cops as wife held it steady.

He got something like 4 years for this incident.

Father in law is a retired Texas ranger, so the woman isn’t afraid to pull the trigger.

nice and no shots had to be fired. Potentially two lives were saved at least one! This is why its hard to quantify the number of lives potentially saved every year by the proper use of firearms.

Just Bought this for my wife. It's a S&W 38 special Airweight with laser and no hammer. Just point and pull the trigger . Can't get any easier than that.

Should have been 40 years.

This is always the correct answer. The most effective weapon is the one you are most effective with.

Well, to be picky -- the trigger pull and the recoil could both be a lot easier than that. Those are very uncomfortable to shoot.

But if that's what she wanted, and if you really think she'll shoot it enough to become proficient, might be a good choice.

Not much you can do about the recoil except load it with wadcutters (assuming you can find them). The trigger pull can be reduced a little with lighter springs - maybe 2-3 pounds -- without sacrificing reliability. But if you try that, be sure you use a good gunsmith.

I'm sitting here trying to remember the name of the guy down in Ascension Ph. (I think it was Lloyd Landry) who shot IPSC, was a very good shooter, was a reliable reloader and was a very good gunsmith (wasn't his day job but he was very good). If you could engage him, or someone of his caliber (pun intended), that could become a handgun that she might practice with.

It is mind numbing to see snub 38s be suggested so often for females. They are decent carry guns but are exactly that - CARRY guns. They are miserable and punishing to shoot.

Good first gun for everyone is a full sized 9mm, period. Find one from a reputable manufacturer that fits well and train. You may have to buy the facsimile airsoft version to practice with today since ammo is hard to find though.

Source: CC instructor for 8+ years. Have yet to find a single student who hasn’t been able to handle a full sized 9mm.

Well never mind. For some reason I though OP was looking for a carry gun for his wife. Maybe that was another thread lol.

Forget my prior recommendation about the revolver. Go with a full size 9mm. Let her pick it out.

I can vouch for this. Love my 9mm though.

Home defense pistol?

Something full sized and steel. My wife has a Beretta 92fs Brigadier that stays in her vehicle. You don't want to carry it anywhere, but its a dream to handle and shoot.

Her carry piece is a Ruger LC9S, it has its role, but is not as fun to shoot. (thought the striker fired version is much nicer than the original).

In home there's a steel Rossi .38 and a Glock 17 depending on which room.

My wife can't pull a DA trigger without very significant effort. Striker or SA only for her. R

No one has said an ar15 pistol.

They are easy to handle. They are easy to aim. They will put down someone as well.

They can be suppressed.

They really are a good home defense weapon if you get the correct cartridge.

To quote our now-amazing president in his infinite wisdom, “you don’t need an assault weapon to defend yourself. Buy
a shotgun.”

I kid. The AR15 is an excellent home defense weapon and I don’t think there’s an issue with it in that role. The one area a handgun will have an advantage over it is if someone were to travel and want to toss a gun in their bag. It’s easier to transport and travel with a handgun.

Well keeping loaded guns in a house with kids is idiotic I don’t care what you say.

Furthermore, anything can always happen. I would NEVER assume a gun is loaded or unloaded. What if you cleaned your gun after the range and didn’t load it and you go to use it assuming it’s loaded?

I understand the hate, but loading a mag and chambering a round even in high stress is as easy as it gets to stay safe. There’s not a perfect answer.

I bought my wife a Ruger LCR .357. Hammerless, so it's a nice purse carry. Practice with .38s and load it for carry with magnums.
