Sounds like you just want a new gun and found a reason the wife would accept.

I bought a .17 a .223 a couple All-star rods and 3 cases of steel shot for my little boy when he was 2. Almost bought him a bow too, but didn't want to push my luck.

out of what you listed .7mm-08 with handloads for reduced recoil.

However 25-06 would be my choice for a kids rifle at 6 yo perhaps a .243.

I once bought Mrs Cove a .243 WSSM for 'yotes and deer and such. She hasn't made it out to hunt with it yet though. Only been 5 years or so. Shoots like a house afire, I tell you.

Man i was blastin away boxes of 3 inch # 2s out of a 20 ga when i was 6. wasnt hittin much but i had a great time doin it. if it takes him till 7 or 8 to shoot it then so be it. ive got a lever action 243. just lookin for somthin wt more power. just have the itch to buy somethin and the perk is i get to shoot it for a few years. and if he sees daddy shootin it he will prob want to shoot it anyway and it may mean more to him when i give it to him.

Get a gun that fits him well in whatever caliber you want.

He'll be able to handle a .30-06 in a gun that fits well better than a .410 in a gun that doesn't.

Damn, is the Remington boycott already over? I knew that would not last long. That would be like this bunch boycotting Kimber.

Maybe you should just buy you a gun and then get him something when he gets older.

FIFY

I don't want to have to feed the teenager that was big enough for a 270 at 6 years old. First time that scope gets him he'll become an Xbox playing Mama's boy. Thankfully you have 4 yrs to see the light.

I used .243 for the first kid and .270. I should have use the .270 earlier. When really young use managed recoil so they do not develope a flinch. It kicks considerablly less.

I have a very small framed child. He wasn't ready or mature enough to shoot anything bigger than a 22lr at 6. Bought a 22-250 in the browning micro line for him. By 8 he loved shooting it. We shoot milk jugs full of water to watch them explode. He has since killed 4 deer and all dropped in their tracks including a pretty nice 7 point last year.

I was never a fan of 22 caliber rifles for deer. But the lack of recoil makes him love to practice and he's a good shot because of it. I use a premium federal load with 60 grain nosler partition bullets. Works great on Texas sized deer. Mature bucks are in the 130lb range.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard 7mm-08 with a Leopold scope.
Sighted it in and never shot it again..
