A rifle with a brake and electronic muffs are a fantastic choice for a kid for so many different reasons.
I have pretty bad hearing loss in my left ear, and I'm 23 years old. DO NOT let your kid shoot too often without hearing protection or he'll end up like me. Deaf at 23.
That said, I don't think it's an absolute necessity. I never had a brake on any of my rifles growing up and I wacked my first deer at 6 years old with a 6.5x55 swede. I know countless people who didn't know what a muzzle brake was until they had killed plenty deer.
If you don't mind spending a little money a rifle with a muzzle brake and some electronic muffs would make any kids hunting experience more enjoyable and better for him in the long run IMO.
Use the muffs for all shooting also, not just the big rifle. You can't get your hearing back.

Electric muffs would be good for any kid. Plus they keep your ears warm. I'm thinking about getting a pair myself.

I should have some. My left ear is fricked up from shooting so much. It really makes absolutely no sense to not have them.

I agree with this 100%. I love my 260 with a brake, I can shoot it all day.
Electronic muffs, I cant say enough, I can have a normal conversation with someone else if they are wearing them and not worry about the ringing when someone decides to shoot.
