It's btwn a 7mm-08, 270, and 308. I'm leaning 270 bc the ammo can be found most anywhere. Hunting on a place where the furthest shot would be 150-200 yrds. Of course a longer shot may present itself somewhere else but im not worried about 400 yrd plus shots. hes 2 now so dad gets a new gun for 4 yrs or so but taking into account recoil which one would you(experts) recommend?

Out of those I would pick the 7mm08. If I got to choose any round, I would pick the 30-30.

7mm-08 or 308

i too would choose a 30-30, nothing like getting a lever action passed down

at six years old...a 7mm-08 .270 or 308 come on...get him something that won't kill his shoulder and make him not want to shot it.

If you want a new rifle buy yourself a new rifle. Wait and see on the type of gun he will need at age 6.

I would say 223 or 243...even though the OB thinks these 2 rounds are only good for killing small game.

ETA: Ill actually add some thought to this post. I killed my first deer with a 30-30 and it didn't kill me nor did it scare me away from guns.

IMO the 7mm-08 is the best youth caliber on the market. It has plenty of power to kill deer but has very little recoil.

I've have a six year old that shoots at 7mmO8 . He shoots it well . We shoot the Remington's with less recoil . Has yet to kill a deer with it yet but he can shoot 6 inch groups at 80 yards .

Pow Pow Cove agreed. It was a right of passage to take your first woods cow with the trusty ole Marlin tirty-tirty. Iron sights.

Dude, a .308? For a 6 year old? Get him a .22 or a .30-30, a .243 like someone mentioned is a good choice, hell it doesn't take much to kill a deer. My neighbor has killed a many with his trusty .22-250.

270?

That's too large for a 6 year old and it's a long action case so not many youth models available. 7mm-08 will shoot a lighter faster projectile where as a 308 will have quadruple the ammo choices. But for my money and for my 6year old I would buy the 243 Remington model Seven and not think twice. Buy the cheap ugly wood stock and cut it off about 6" so it's short enough to install a LimbSaver recoil pad and still fit him. In a couple of years when he's big enough buy an aftermarket adult synthetic stock and replace it.

A .270 or .308 shouldn't be in the running for a kid under 10 imho. I'd be afraid they would ruin the kid with the recoil.

My little dude dropped 2 in his inaugural deer season last year with a .223. It's just a regular .223 and not a youth model. But if he's got a good prop he's fairly deadly with it.

He's 2?

Sounds like you just want a new gun and found a reason the wife would accept.

Anyway, at 6 yrs old, i would lean to a .243. 7mm-08 at the max

7mm08 with reduced recoil loads is the best choice. Buy a youth model with a shorter length of pull that will fit him better. When he gets older, replace the youth stock with an adult stock.

Remington has a good youth rifle. Look into the new Savage youth model with the Accutrigger.
