Is it necessary to anchor a gun safe to the floor?

Looking at getting a Cannon 48-gun box and don't want to bolt it to the floor.

Those things are heavy as hell. Mine is half that size and it's not anchored. Took two of us to manhandle that thing.

You could always find the wall studs and sink some lag bolts.

Only if you don’t want a crack head to walk off with it!!
2/3 crackheads can steal twin Yamaha 300 outboards, they can easily carry off a safe. I would make them work for it.

Mine 36 gun safe is in the garage. I plan to anchor it, but just never get around to it. Not a major concern of mine. But if a couple crackheads get into my garage when I'm out on vacation or something, it wouldn't be that hard for 2 guys to make off with it.

Yea, that thing isn't going anywhere. I think mine is a 38 gun safe and it's not going anywhere unless I pay a moving crew to move it.

A $10 furniture dolly and a ratchet strap can get a 1000lb safe out of a house in a couple of minutes.
You don't have to do it, but most of the actual theft protection comes from being placed correctly and being secured to the floor.

The reason to bolt it down is to keep it from being flipped down with the door up. Thrives will use a prybar to open the door, steal your shite and leave your safe in the house. It’s much easier to pry the door open with it laying down.
Two thieves with pry bars can get most big box safes open in 5-7 minutes.
My Libert Colonial 50 weighs almost 1000lbs empty. I have it bolted to my slab.
Cannon 48 weighs 500lbs. It can be turned over easily.

Crackheads aren't taking the safe. They'll be taking what's inside it.

This happened to someone I work with. It’s always best to bolt them down if you can. An alarm system is also going to reduce the chance of them having much time to get anything done though. If they have a lot of time, they can get into any safe.

No reason to anchor it. These cheap made box store gun safes are super thin metal and insulation breaks easy, Two crow bars and one beer and your in them really easy. Seen a guy get in one with a saw zall and a 12' blade in under 10 min. Long story short. they not leaving with it, they will just break in it as it stands. If your serious about a safe. turn a small closet in your home into one with real metal, legit insulation and a true door.

64 gun safe here and I don’t think it can get hauled off unless there were 4 people or a come along to drag it up on a trailer.
Of course, it no longer has any guns in it since the boat acc…..I…..dent……dang it!

Safes in general are designed to make theft difficult, not impossible. The more money you pay, the more difficult it is to get into. But it's never impossible. Anchoring them down is just an extra level of difficulty for a thief, but with enough time and motivation a professional can still get in there.
There are also some laws around this, depending on what you are storing in the safe. My wife has a safe with things related to her business and the feds require it to be anchored down. It's not a "suggestion", it's a federal regulation. Take that into consideration too, depending on what you got in there.

I’ve got 2 and they’re both bolted to the floor. One with lag bolts thru hardwood floor and another with expansion anchors into concrete. Criminals don’t mind dollying a full safe.

if you have kids in the house anchor it, you never know what they will do and you would hate for it to tip over on one of them.

Give me a drill and a Sawzall and I'll have everything out of the safe in very little time and I'll leave the safe in place. They are designed to hold firearms. They are not designed to keep people from stealing what's inside.
