Whenever I take a firearm into a store that isn't on my side, I have the bolt/slide locked back/open and the magazine in my pocket, or double check the tube before walking in.

What is this? Those two dudes were horrified at what they might see.

It's like all the deer pics you see with the barrel of the gun pointed at the hunter or some kid, I cringe every time.
Like this 23 years and it's bound to happen

That's an episode of Top Gear.

I found one in a pawn shop loaded many years ago. The idiot that owned the shop thought I loaded the gun.

Good Lord...
I am insane about checking my firearm to make sure it doesn't have a round chambered

Store clerk should always check the weapon to see if its loaded as well as the customer. Doesn't hurt one bit to double check.

If I’m ever handed any type of gun, I check it unless I’m about to shoot it (at the range).

I went to the gun show in Bossier a couple years ago and found a nice Sharps derringer. The seller cut the ziplock around the hammer, handed it to me and told me to pull the trigger to check the action. I swung the barrel open and it had 4 bullets in it. Fun times

Yep. And on top of that, most every duck hunter I've ever known has had checking the safety so drilled into them that they can’t even remember putting it on when picking up a gun or after shooting. It’s just a subconscious reflex.
I’ve probably gotten ready to shoot any number of guns and went to pull the trigger only to realize the safety is on. My uncle (he was in his 80’s) accidentally shoot his foot off hunting. He thought his shotgun didn’t have one chambered and that the safety was on. It started raining so he put it inside his slicker, stumbled, and pulled the trigger.
He walked out, drove home, had his leg amputated from the knee down, and kept hunting till he died at 96. Tough old bird and been hunting his whole life but the one time he was vigilant he had an accident.

I have been at the Baton Rouge gun show at the Centroplex and there was a discharge on two separate occasions.
First was a dude that brought a gun inside without checking it in.
The other was a vendor showing off his carry gun and discharged.
It’s very eerie feeling and weird to hear a gun show go completely silent.

Don't know if y'all remember this from last year. Unload the f'ing weapon as soon as you are no longer actively hunting. Always have positive control of a loaded weapon.

The UK Top Gear. Basically 3 British guys goofing off around cars. It’s a fun show.

Local gun store I use has a couple Mason jars full of live rounds that have been discovered chambered in used trade ins. It's unreal the amount of people who don't even think to clear the weapon even if they are selling it or trading it.
If the story is true and that was a used shotgun pulled off the rack, it's impossible for that to happen if one of several people who handled it would have cleared it.

There was a photo I saw, possibly on here, of a 5 gallon plastic water jug on the counter of a gun/pawn shop that was more than half filled with un-fired rounds that were removed from the "unloaded" guns brought into the shop.

That jug might be pretty valuable now
Now you can get twice the money for a loaded gun as you can an unloaded one at the pawn shop

It really is crazy how all over the place people are with keeping a round in the chamber. I’ve been hunting with guys that don’t chamber a round until right before they are ready to shoot.
Honestly the first thing that comes to my mind is unchambering a round in case there’s a game warden so I usually unload when I can see the truck, boat, or whatever. Now obviously a range gun is different, but I don’t know why you would keep a range gun loaded when you put it in the gun case.

I've known people who carry every day, keep the safety on, and don't keep one in the pipe because they're afraid of ND. They've trained themselves to rack the slide and flip the safety off during their draw.
I'm diametrically opposed. All I want to have to remember to do during a draw is to get the pistol presented properly to get a sight picture and pull the trigger. In that kind of stress, the less I have to successfully accomplish, the better. I don't have kids to be concerned about, so my pistols do not have manual safeties and there's ALWAYS one in the chamber.
Everyone's got his own thoughts and methods commensurate with his training, philosophy on carrying, and comfort level.

A friend of mine got a .30-30 for Christmas years ago. His brother thought it was a good idea to load the gun inside the house and, of course, the gun went off making a small hole in the ceiling. They used Crest toothpaste to quickly mend the hole as the ceiling was the same color as the toothpaste. What they didn't realize was the big-arse hole in the roof right over their parents' bed which quickly manifested itself after a rainstorm. Luckily nobody was killed (or hurt) until the soggy ceiling above the parents' gave way one rainy night.
