What should I buy? I know little about these.

TIA

Edit: settled on stainless, likely Henry, Marlin, Winchester in that order. Can’t decide on caliber. Little hesitant about tube loading

What are you wanting to do with it?
How much do you want to spend?
Deer hunt, plink, home defense tactical route?

I have several lever actions. I love the rustic look and feel. My favorite is a browning BLR 7mm08. It gets used the most out of all my guns. That being said, everyone needs a 3030.

I'm looking real hard at the Henry X in 45.70, and the Marlin Dark in 30-30. Need a good thicket gun with iron sights. 60 yard shot maximum. I like the tube loading/unloading of the Henry. The Henry's now also have side gates so you have the option.

Those tacticool Marlin Dark Series rifles ain't bad looking. (All three models have a Dark Series, I only linked the 1894.)

I’m a big Marlin fan, if you can find a real JM Marlin. I would not buy a new one right now though. Lots of people seem to like the Henry’s. I have very little experience with them except for a couple 22’s. Both the Marlins and the Henry’s will easily accept scopes or an aperture sight. Buckhorn sights are garbage in my opinion. If you don’t want a scope, put a Skinner or Ranger Point aperture on the receiver.

key point

you can go from a .22, pistol calibers, classics like 30-30, to a BLR or Henry Long Ranger in full power modern rifle loads like .308 and 30-06

Yeah those are nice, I have been trying to find an ol beater that I can cut down to 16in shorten the stock by 1in and cerakote.
I use my marlin 336 for 80 percent of my hunts, with a 1.5-5 low profile scope and detachable scope mounts. For 100yard and in thicket/woods it’s a hard gun to beat.

Budget 1500 plus or minus unless it doesn’t get me quality

Well not sure if your trolling or a typo but!!
While there are lever gun shotguns I’m pretty sure you will not want to use for duck hunting.

I have my PawPaw's Marlin 336 chambered in 35 Rem. and really like it. Not sure if they still make them like they did in the late 40's or early 50's when he got it, but I would recommend the same gun.
