I had no idea there were chipmunks in south LA.

One of my wife's cats decided to leave me a trophy in one of my backyard pissing spots. We've had baby flying squirrels fall out of the same tree near the spot but I never knew chipmunks were around. I can't tell if I should feel dumb for not knowing this but I've never seen a live one before.

Outside of Baton Rouge my cat gets at least one a month and "plays" with it until it's unalive. I always feel bad for the little critters.

In all parishes? I was born and raised in SLA east of the river and never even heard of chipmunks being around much less seen them.

I'm in West Fel Parish and they're everywhere. Had hell with them when I first moved, my dogs made the backyard look like it'd been hit with a WWI artillery strike to get after them.

Google says they're mostly in EBR, West Fel, and East Fel parishes. I only knew they were in LA before I moved because I'd seen them in Tunica Hills.

That makes sense because I've been all over STT, Washington, Tangi and never seen them.

I see them in Woodville when I’m deer hunting over a creek area.

This is near the eastern border of EBR. My only experience was with the Disney cartoon.

I’ve never seen one in Mobile where I live but there’s a certain area at our farm in Selma that used to see them from time to time. One of my favorite things to watch in the woods , so damn quick.

I do not think any of that green West of the river is accurate. Only ones I have ever seen have been in Natchez.

Morganza Spillway offer an ideal environment for chipmunks. They rely on the area's dense brush, fallen logs, and hardwood trees for foraging nuts, seeds, and fruits. Unlike wider-ranging mammals, chipmunks are solitary burrow-dwellers that maintain small, heavily defended home territories. Eastern chipmunks reside in the forested regions surrounding the Morganza Spillway in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana.

I honestly don't know, but always associated them with uplands along the lines of:

Louisiana Distribution and Habitat Restrictions

quote:

• Upland vs. Wetland Environments: The eastern chipmunk is Louisiana's only true ground-burrowing squirrel, and its survival relies heavily on high, dry upland hardwood forests. It strongly avoids swampy, low-lying wetlands.
• Parish Range: Verified populations of the species are mostly limited to a handful of Florida Parishes—such as East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, and West Feliciana—where appropriate dry loess hill habitats exist.
• The Morganza Spillway Environment: Located in Pointe Coupee Parish, the Morganza Spillway is a major floodway designed to divert water from the Mississippi River. The surrounding bottomland hardwood forests and floodplains are frequently inundated or saturated with moisture. Because chipmunk burrows sit less than three feet below the surface, these areas face high risk of burrow flooding and structural collapse, making them entirely unsuitable habitats for the species

How far from the Tunica Hills area? We used to see them all the time around St. Francisville. Never saw them toward Tangipahoa parish or anywhere near New Orleans.
