I'd personally drive a 4x4 Colorado before a 2WD Sierra.

Used to see this a lot. Haven't in at least 10 years.

I used to build and wheel 4 wheel drives quite often. If you are getting it for "off road" buying a lighter truck like a Tacoma with posi or a locker will shock the stuff out of you. I'd say a light truck with something in the rear diff will go 99.8% of the "off road" places a hunter /fisherman will go. I've come off of mountains in Nebraska/Montana/Colorado/New Mexico/Nevada/CA/Tenn in the snow in mine. Pulled boats in snow in Maine/Rhode Island/Maryland in 2wd in snow no issue. If you need it for ramps or towing, ditto on rear diff. Now, even if you were building it for wheeling, I'd almost say locker before 4wd depending on conditions. As an illustration, I hunted Maine and New Hampshire in a rental minivan all last season, all forest roads. Keep the tires straight, wheel not turned, momentum up, stay off the brakes, pre walk anything you are a lil iffy about, know your limits, be willing to walk. I've towed the freemans out with a lx470 in 2wd, again, momentum, low gear, don't try to peel out.

3/4 or 1 ton trucks are useless off pavement without 4WD. Heavy bastards will get stuck in wet grass.

Better to have and not need... but I also didn't pay 10k more just to get 4x4. If anything it was a 2k difference (used Tundra).
Also, the resale is always easier with a 4x4. When I was selling my F-150 a few years ago, the first question anyone asked was if it was 4x4. After being asked that same question 15 times, I vowed to buy a 4x4 from then on.

Rarely.... However I have 160k on mine and have not had one single front end issue.... Something I could not say about my previous 2 2 wheel drives.

If I towed a boat a lot I would want 4x4, other than that a 2x4 with a locking rear dif is fine. I just remeber one time I was putting a boat in and when I went to drive up the ramp I started slipping back. I locked the rear diff and it came right out, but had my front wheels been able to pull I would have felt better.
I had 4x4s as a teen, but I had a mudding addiction too and spent too much on replacing engines.

just get the 4x4, you wont regret it. since I had mine I used it when I needed it. my dad calls me to do stuff his 2wd truck will get stuck doing so its been helpful. also you never know when you may need it. its more of a convenience and worth it. I had a 2wd before this and it got stuck on wet grass, so yea I have enjoyed having the 4x4 when needed. I tow my bay boat a lot and it was useful when pulling out of a steep launch this past summer, a 2wd would have been in a bind.

I got stuck once way up a hollow in the middle of nowhere in SW VA. Just trying to turn around, barely went off the soft shoulder and then I was stuck there all day, waiting for some local to come by, hoping they weren't going to rob or abduct me. That day I swore I'd never buy a truck without 4x4 again. To me, it's not about how much would you use it, it's about would you EVER use it. That 1% of the time you may actually use it you are SO happy you have it.

I've had my Jeep for just over 4 years. I've actually needed 4x4 about a half dozen times. But I wasn't getting home without it in those cases, and some were extreme. I'll never own at least one 4x4. When we got that bad snow/ice storm about 3 years ago, my wife made it less than half a mile in her van. It took me a while, but I made it to her work, spent the night, and we drove up some nasty ice covered hills the next morning when it was light to get our 8 month old from daycare, and back home. Then I picked my daughter up from a friend's house, and drove about 30 miles or so to get my mother in law. There were thousands of stranded cars on the side of the road, at least three I spotted flipped over in ditches, and some that had slid into trees and telephone poles. The only vehicles on the roads were municipal trucks and other guys in a 4x4 truck or Jeep. That was the day that my wife was finally convinced it wasn't just a toy and a really practical vehicle, and she quit bitching about how she had the family car and I drove a toy.

Need? Never! Want? Once every 4 years!

I will never NOT have a 4x4. Bailed me out of too many situations

My 2wd Silverado usually has no problems pulling the boat up the ramp. Even with lillies. However, there was one time where I came back late from an afternoon fishing trip. I was the only truck left in the parking lot at McGee's (Henderson). Apparently their ramp has a large pot hole below the water in a certain spot. My trailer tire got caught in it. I had to call someone to come pull me out. It was dark and the mosquitos were so bad I was breathing them in. That was when I decided every truck I buy from now on will have 4wd.

I've used mine a few times a year. Like a previous poster said, it depends on your needs and situation's you find yourself in. I swore a few years ago that I would never buy a 2wd ever again ??. But that's me.

If you have to ask, then you don't need it.
Posted on 11/4/16 at 6:53 am to GREENHEAD22
I view my 4x4 the same way as my light bar. Might not need them 29 days out of the month but great to have for that 1 day you do need it

I equate 4 wheel drive to an airbag.....hope I don't need it, but I'm glad it's there if I do need it!
