How far in advance to trust weather/sea forcasts?
Curious how far in advance you make fishing trip plans based off of the projected weather and sea forecasts?

For me, if im 2-3 days out i trust the forecast enough to plan some trips but i know its still unpredictable.

What about you guys?

Wind is hard to forecast and you can't ever fully trust it unfortunately. You can use it to guide decisions but you ultimately have to go to know unfortunately. Last week they were saying Friday was going to be 1-2 ft seas all week, even on Thursday. Get out there Friday morning and its 2-4 ft seas. Just like tomorrow, they have been saying 1 ft or less all week. Planning on making a trip out to Chandeleur Islands. Hopefully they are right.

Depends on what I am planning. Duck hunting I watch the weather all season and have plans for weeks out. Going offshore I will start about a week out and monitor until I get back to the hill. Inshore and Freshwater fishing I usually don't pay a lot of attention to the weather...just go on the day of with consideration of the weather. Much more interested in tides or flow usually.

And beyond that they increasingly revert to "mean conditions" for the location. Just too many variables to trust anything beyond that.

Is it just me, or have others noticed how off the weather predictions have been the last two years

I mean it’s a moving target. If I want to go one weekend, I’ll look 5-7 days out. If ok, I make tentative plans. Then look again 2-3 days out. Then look again 1 day out for final decision. Then everything can change again as soon as I hit the jetties and find out weatherman missed it.

But to answer your question I only rely on the 1 day advanced forecast.

Totally agree. I’m out of Orange Beach, last Friday they forecasted 1-2, it was more like 2-4 and 4-6 if not 4-8 coming back in. Sh*t was rough.

I start looking a week out and watch it daily.

I've crossed the bar and turned right around after clearing it seeing it wasn't going to fun.

I know that feeling well, that is why I said we kinda make the final verdict at the jetties. Now it is really hard to deep six a trip after you have come damn near to the point of no return but we have turned around a couple of times when it was like frick that shite.

It really depends on your location and the time of the year.

One day is decent for wind/seas offshore... You also have to take into consideration weather from the previous 12-24 hours if you’re in open/deep enough water to hold a swell.

The good thing about sites like Windy is you can compare forecast models and get a little more confidence when still 2-3 days out.

Yep

That’s why bringing a bay boat off shore beyond 15 miles is always risky.

Slick / nice out and a couple squalls or wind shifts mid morning and you have a dangerous early afternoon ride home.
