Indirectly got into a debate with some "experts" over at Reddit. Just asked about legality concerns with carrying loaded firearms in the vehicle. Mainly the Mossberg Shockwave. I didn't mention the word "truck gun" anywhere, and they all let me have it regarding the firearms practicality and how truck guns are a dumb/dangerous idea.

i get it. but everyone has different reasons for having firearms in their vehicle. i've seen people mention having truck guns here, and i'm curious how you guys feel about them.

I throw one in the truck occasionally -- usually based on political events.

For example, the day the SCOTUS decision was due on Obamacare, I tossed one in my truck. Figured that there might be Mogadishu-style barricades around town if the court ruled it unconstitutional.

My "truck gun" is an M1 carbine, equipped with an Aimpoint T-1, in a nylon case with 4-5 mags (CorBon DPX hollow points).

Any time I'm in my vehicle I have a G19 on my belt and and a 9mm Shield in the console. But I'm a lot better shot with a rifle - especially out beyond 20 yards.

A vehicle is not a secure place to store a firearm

I don't keep one in my truck all of the time but I'll throw one in there when I travel or go into a not so great area.

Don't leave a gun in a truck for any longer than you are in the vehicle. It's that simple.

I’d love to keep an AR pistol in the backseat but I also don’t want it to get stolen so there’s that

The experts over at Reddit would question your motives as to why you would have an AR-15 pistol in your truck. They think that if you have that or a shotgun, it’s not going to end well for you if you ever have to use it in a defensive situation vs using a handgun.

“If you have time to get to your vehicle to get your truck gun (shotgun/rifle), you have time to drive away from your threat.”

Here’s the Reddit thread. Notice I never say anything about truck guns or trunk guns. They just automatically assume that’s what I meant in the OP.

Baton Rouge.

Remenber -- Ferguson, Mo riots were in 2014. Pretty much unheard of until it happened.

And in 2016 thugs were marching in the streets of BR after the Alton Sterling shooting. Two weeks later three BR cops were killed and three were wounded in an ambush on Airline Hwy (about a mile from BR Police HQ) by a gunman acting to "avenge" the Sterling shooting.

I tend to believe this stuff can happen just about anywhere you have enough thugs and enough rabble rousers available to stir them up.
