It’s crazy to me that on public we can leave a stand at the base of the tree or put out 24 game cameras. It’s all personal property left unattended and it causes issues Shouldn’t be allowed

You are pretty dedicated to get up that early, get in the stand an hour and a half before shooting hours

Louisiana WMA’s allow you to leave your stand out, but it has to be removed from the tree and in a “non-hunting position” and tagged with the owners name and contact info.

This seems like a terrible policy that leads to this exact scenario, especially when most people are using similar gear. Suprised it’s not more common that there’s a dust up when someone’s walking out of an area with a camera in their hands. Then again LDWF is at least partially motivated to allow it by Pittman-Robertson so I guess it’s not really surprising.

Is it not illegal to leave your stand on a tree overnight on public hunting land?
some NWR areas allow you to leave a stand(or two) with all your pertinent information on it.

Every once in a while I think man I’m kind of bored with my lease and maybe I should go hunt a public spot just to mix it up. I then read one of these stories or talk to someone who tells me one just like it and I’m like screw it I’ll just keep hunting my lease and the same 20trees I always hunt!!!
of my 10 worst interactions with other hunters 8 have come on private land/clubs.

Most folks on public land are very courteous. On MANY wood cock hunts I have had folks pull up and ask me where I was going to work my dawgs as they wanted to be well upwind of us. Works in their favor

Agree completely…there is no need to create a bunch of needless drama everywhere you go. I am done with all of that bs.

Yup. Been hunting public land for 20+ years and can count the bad encounters on one hand.

Op, the dude you ran into sounds like a real dumbass. I wouldn't let one bad encounter stop you. Plenty of friendly folks out there.

Something like this can happen on private clubs too. It isn’t limited to just public land.

I’m fairly certain it’s against the WMA rules to leave your stand in the tree.

What if it's just a kitchen chair and a board? Wish I knew the full story on this one I found a couple months ago. I don't think this is an active stand anymore.

No he drove a black ford f-150. Or maybe was a f-250. Def a ford. Big tires. I got the license plate number.

And to the person asking my about trying to bully Me out of stand. That’s what I initially thought too. But he waited a long time For me to get back to my truck. He didn’t have a climber on him. I do think someone took his stand he left out there. He just accused the wrong person and if he thought I was about to climb down and give him My Base he was dead wrong. It did feel weird to be cursing and talking very aggressively at each other when we both have weapons that could kill each other with at the time. That was strange to me. And unsettling to be honest.

People tend to accuse others of things that they themselves do. I guarantee this guy has stolen other people's stuff before.

Not familiar with that truck. I know there’s a guy that hunts it hard in a silver Tahoe and he’s under 30 if I had to guess.

Correct.

Ole boy's stand could have been confiscated by LDWF but unless he had it out there for a while and hadn't been back for a few days I can't imagine them finding it if he left it overnight.

Longer than I want but have to tell the whole story. I get to the tree I was hoping would be open at 4:50 am. Used my climber and am locked in for 5:10. At 6:28 I see a head bright white headlamp lamp walking towards me. So I turn on my little red headlamp just to let this person know I’m on this tree and move along either way. Bc he was literally walking right the the tree I was already seated in. But it was still pretty dark so no worries. Figured the light would clue him in. It didn’t.

He proceeds to walk right to the base of the tree and says well I see you got my tree but it looks like you got my stand too. I’m like WTF? So I tell the guy no this is my stand. The one I came in with and the one I will be leaving with. He is adamant that it’s his. Bc he left it in this exact tree yesterday. I was like well I guess someone came by and stole it. He says yeah you stole it. Tells me he recognizes the bottom of it and it’s the same straps as his. Well as it turns out it’s the same straps as all summit tree stands have since that’s what it came with. It’s a summit mini viper. That’s what I have. He finally tells me his was a summit open shot climber. I’m like well there you go theses are different stands. I’m not your thief. But he’s not done yet. He says the bases are the same on both models (which they actually are I had to google that but not surprised they prob use that base for a lot of their climbers). So now he is claiming I stole just his base. Thats when I officially confirmed he was possibly on the spectrum. So I ask him, you think I woke up at 3:45 am, drove 45 min and walked almost a mile in here with just the top half of my stand hoping I would miraculously find the bottom half of yours I could use. He clearly thought that was a logical thing someone would try.

I think he did leave his stand to claim that tree. And I had that exact tree in mind. From scouting. It’s a good tree. Prob reason he was there day before. But I beat him to it today. And honestly if his stand was there I would have just found another tree. I might have uttered a curse word or two when I saw it there as a place holder but I’m not that worried about a spot to try and get in any sort of confrontation over it. There’s plenty of woods. But it wasn’t there and I’m sure some local did steal it.

The way this trail is there’s only really one parking spot. And he asked me if that was my truck even though he knew it was already. And said yeah ok and walked off. So I’m like great now maybe I’ll have a keyed truck or flat tires when I get back. But no, He was waiting there when I got back to my truck. And still with the same shite. He’s still mad that I stole his stand. I don’t really have anything new to say so I am putting my stuff up and told him it’s still not his. He says now that he’s had time to cool off he MAYBE believes it’s not his but it’s crazy that I was in the same exact tree and his stand was missing. But he still pissed at me for something I didn’t do. No apology nothing. Just gets in his truck and drives off.

He was a younger kid prob 22-28 if I had to guess and I bet good chance he posts here. If you read this you’re an a-hole and handled that about as bad as you could have. This was all In Livingston section of Maurepas WMA off of King George Rd.

He's a moron for leaving an expensive climber in public woods where any Tom, Dick or Larry could easily steal it.

I love how you challenged the thought process for him with this part......

I often use that same strategy when people accuse me of something without thinking it through first.

Did you see him on the ground OP? Did he have a stand with him? Everyone likes to act like they know the woods perfectly but I’ve sat on the wrong tree plenty of times and I like to think my sense of direction is excellent. Especially if there’s a distraction like a guy you think is in your spot.

I’ll leave my stands in the woods but only over night when I walk out that night and hunt in the morning. If that’s illegal anywhere, I mean come on.

If it’s longer than that you would be dumb to leave it on the tree as it’s much easier to see. I usually put mine in some palmettos or under some brush.

Going back to my previous point though, I’ve hidden stuff in the woods and on occasion it can be harder than you expect to find it in the dark in the morning.

Is this one of those areas where the locals are a pain? Was thinking about taking my kid to that same road to hunt down some tree rats next weekend.

I’ve never had an issue with locals. I usually make a squirrel hunt there in early October but it’s tough on the dry land since Ida uprooted so many oaks.

Agreed. The nicest friendliest folks I’ve met have been on public and have offered some very solid hunting advice.

OP,

What loop said is true. Don’t let one bad encounter keep you away from it. I decided to hunt public for my first time this season and was pretty anxious about it due to the negative stereotypes about it. I now consider it one of the greatest choices I’ve made and have met some good guys.

Per my last reply to delta but I have seen some very ugly encounters on private clubs that almost led to violence. I think it was about 2 years ago now but some baw posted a thread on here on why he got kicked out of his hunting lease and it was ridiculous as to why he got kicked out. It can happen on both private and public. Unfortunately, shite happens and people are just terrible.
Stay at it and keep hunting hard friend!

he was almost certainly at the wrong tree if he had left it there the night before.
