Any recommendations for a Christmas birthday gift for a 12 year old boy who loves to fish. He is not really into video games which is great. He loves to fish. Expensive and small item recommendations will both be great since his birthday and Christmas are both in December. Thanks

When I was 12 and was into fishing, a new tackle box was always my thing. Just getting to re-organize and go through all my lures was fun.

First bait caster. There is no truer testament to the love of fishing like taking out obscene amounts backlashes. But once you learn, you’ll love that reel for life.

Lifetime fishing license with all endorsements, if you haven't already done that.

If he's 12, in Louisiana, you can get a combo hunting/fishing license for $300 that will get him all this for the rest of his life, even if he moves out of state.

Basic hunting
Big Game
Bow
Primitive Firearm
Louisiana Duck and Turkey stamps
WMA Hunting Permit
Basic fishing
Saltwater Fishing

About the only thing it doesn't cover is federal stamps or special equipment like crab pots

At that age I played with my tackle box and gear more than I fished.

Don’t know what you want to spend but a tackle box full of $1 lures would make me happy and I’m starting to get gray hair.

How about a guided fishing trip somewhere?

I’ve taken my son on a guided trip to Bass Pro Shops Dogwood Canyon. It was his 1st fly fishing trip. I had the guide spend his entire time with my son and help him and I went and did my on thing until he hooked one. Then I’d video it. His first 1st trout on his own was a 4-5 lbs rainbow.

Took him on a mosquito lagoon trip last year with a guide (that now has a TV show). Fishing was a little slow but he was able to get his 1st redfish.

Can’t beat memories like that for both of you.

Tackle box or bag system, new rod, new reel, gift card to Academy or local reel/bait shop, line spooler/stripper, digital hand scale, fishing hat, fishing shirt, etc.

I think there are monthly subscriptions to “tackle clubs” which sends out boxes of different lures to try out and what not although I’ve never bothered to look into them. You get get him a subscription for 6 months or something.

Let him pick out a new reel and have a custom fishing pole made for him to his liking.

If he fishes saltwater then get him one of those belts with the grab-it gloves and retractable pliers. Think they are in the $35-$40 range. Very handy when speck fishing.

OP, Give us a budget..... you have everything from $1 baits to a skiff!

I have the catcher's mitt..... the pliers that come with it are awesome. Specks fall right out if the glove. I rather use one of thos little $2 yellow things you get from wal mart.

Expensive and small item recommendations

Nice pair of fishing pliers with sheath

Filet Knife - Fixed blade not electric. Show him how to clean his own fish.
*I'd also buy one of those gloves that prevents cutting yourself

These are items he can still use and enjoy 20 yrs from now.

Maybe a subscription to Mystery Tackle Box? I could see a kid getting into receiving those boxes of lures each month.
