know there are a lot of firearms out there passed down from PawPaw, AtF will want them registered. And all that info is on the paperwork sent from your ffl. Again, this is from ATF website.
Who gives a shute what the ATF wants. Your FFL background form on file only pertains to the purchases from an FFL or transfers with FFL's. It has no way to track personal transfers that are completely legal. I can sell all my guns tonsome guy in a parking lot as long as I dont know he is a felon, etc. I don't even have to know his name 10 minutes later. So they have no way of registering guns as they are "in the wind" at that point. You are just wrong on this point.
Only NFA items are registered and must legally be registered to the owner at the time of possession.

There was no reason you went in guns blazing on a question that a guy wanted to know. You are the one that called him stupid
That’s not the way this board goes.
I called you out on it.
Don’t be an a-hole.

ffl. All this info is on ATF’s website by the way. It’s where I got educated on this.
Who’s that?
If you’re referring people to the ATF’s website, then you came to the wrong website.
THERE IS NO REGISTRATION OF FIREARMS IN THIS COUNTRY.

Oh, ya think???
Does that mean you HAVE to?
No. Why? Because this is America and that isn’t a fricking law.
Do you know what else the ATF wants? No one to ever own a single long gun again.
Do you know what Congress wants? An unarmed populace.
Are you going to go along with that too?

You're... and you'll have to forgive him, he doesn't deal with stupid very well my state quite explicitly bans a gun registry and requires dealers to destroy records after 30 days.

You gifted the gun to him while he was still living here.

I don’t think what you’re saying is actually accurate. If the handgun is ever lost/stolen and then used in some sort of crime, it will be traced back to me by ATF. I will then have to fess up that Imgave it to my son who lives in another state. Both he and I will be subject to the 5k fine and jail time for taking a handgun across state lines without following proper federal laws.

Why? I don't know where you live, but in Florida you can just say you sold it at a garage sale. As long as they're of age and have a Florida ID you've complied with the law.

can't you find that bill of sale you and your son did 7 years ago?

Yes, in that specific case, technically that's true. The point is they have no way to prove that unless you confess to it. If a gun is used in a crime, they can find out if you purchased it from an FFL, but they cannot prove you still own it and you have no duty to keep track of who you sold/gave it to with a paperwork trail (unless you yourself are an FFL). So there is no true required tracking/registration system. Maybe you sold the gun to a friend in your state, he moved to the state your son lives, then sold it to him since you all know each other. It's impossible to enforce it. Not saying you should or shouldn't do that (my first post about not knowing where he lived was tongue in cheek), just pointing out they cannot force you to privately transfer guns in a traceable manner (at least most state laws and federal law).
And as much as I hate criminals illegally obtaining guns, the system protects our 2a rights and that inability to track should never be infringed upon.

it shouldnt be the way it is, but I'd just pay the ~$50 to ship/transfer and not have to worry about it ever again v. some elaborate lie that has even a .00001% chance of fricking me in the arse.

First off……
ALL FIREARMS this day and time are registered. Thats why you fill out a Form 4473.
A 4473 doesn't even prove that you bought the gun. If I go to Academy, fill out a 4473, get approved, then my card gets declined at the register, I sure as hell don't own that gun.

OP is clearly not going to fudge on any ATF rule.. Let him pay two FFL's and go through proper channels.

And that is exactly my point kew. ATF goon squad has recently murdered a fellow from Littlerock, AR.
Again, I just got through sending a firearm to my grandson less than 2 months ago. I don’t want ATF goon squad busting down my door at 2:30am.
Ask yourself this…. If something happens will ATF come after them? Will they pay your fine or go to jail for you?

Free men don't need government permission to have a gun.

If the handgun is lost/stolen from you, it's no longer your responsibility. Because you should have reported it stolen- right? And once THAT happens, it's not on you.
Honestly, the last consideration I would ever have regarding anything, is what happens if it's used in a crime. I'm not going to do that myself, and I don't plan on things getting stolen from me.
