If you ant to be legal about it just find an FFL that accepts a personal transfer near him and ship it to the FFL. The FFL will probably want a copy of your DL and your son will have to pay a transfer fee. If not just give him the gun the next time you see him.

Are you shipping it or handing it to him? If handing it to him, hand it to him and that is that. Frick the feds.
If you are shipping it then it has to be FFL to FFL.

Or he could say "My father gave it to me when I lived in LA"

Are you talking about you don’t own, like you’d like to buy him an HK P30sk and gift that to him? You could buy one and ship it to an FFL near you…then have them ship it to an FFL in Texas. Or you could just give him $850 and he could have it transferred to himself directly.

I just got through transferring a firearm to my grandson who lives in another state. Here is what I had to do.
If your gun is registered the process is a little easier. Otherwise a Form 4473 must be filled out to register the firearm. It has to go ffl to ffl. I paid my ffl a $25 transfer fee to ship the firearm.
Receiving ffl will then have your son fill out paperwork for the transfer. Kinda like when you sell a vehicle. That gets run through a background check. Usually takes just a few minutes for background check. Firearm will then be registered to your son. Receiving ffl will charge a transfer fee. Shipping charges are your responsibility. I shipped UPS. And lots of insurance.
I hope this helps.

Yep, that’s the process, but why do you have to pay an FFL to ship it? I believe there is no legal requirement to have an FFL,ship it . And why do you say that “ if the gun is registered to me, it’s a little easier “ ? Which btw it is . Thanks

There is no registration of guns in America unless you live in a liberal utopia state.

UPS and FEDEX changed shipping of firearm rules last year. It’s almost impossible for an individual to ship a firearm now. You have to have a firearm shipping account with them now. If you lie about what you are shipping then insurance is not going to pay if it gets lost or stolen. Best to have an FFL ship it.

Could you not carry your gun to visit him in TX and accidentally leave it there as a forgetful old man? (Biden precedent says you can't be prosecuted if so!) Being a good son, he's holding on to it for you until the next time you come to visit and hopefully remember to retrieve it?

First off……
ALL FIREARMS this day and time are registered. Thats why you fill out a Form 4473.
Second…..
A ffl has to ship, but you can prepay shipping and save a few dollars.
You need to get educated before you start that ratchet jaw.
I don’t tolerate stupid very well.

I get the sentiment of what you are saying, but thats not why you fill out a 4473. a 4473 alone cannot act as a mechanism for an adhoc registration. the mechanism you are suggesting is an adhoc registration is an FFLs bound book. But even then once a firearm is transferred away from an FFL holder the bound book paper trail starts to fall apart. I'm not agreeing with the current system, but advocating all firearms are registered is irresponsible. If people are made to believe there already is a formal registration then it makes it hard to convince them otherwise when the atf/state tries to implement one for real. If you want to educate people stick to the facts and why you think they are bad or good.

Claim your son as an illegal alien and just give it to him, no questions asked. He might even get free healthcare and a $1500.00 debit card.

Here’s your story: you sold the gun to someone in your home state. You didn’t ask for his ID and don’t know who it is.
Your son’s story: he bought the gun from someone in his home state, doesn’t know who. It’s just a crazy coincidence that your son bought the same gun that you previously sold a stranger. Prove us wrong.

How do you deal with a-hole, because you’re being one
Besides that, who the hell are you?

An update- I think it may have already been mentioned. USPS does not accept handguns for shipping and UPS and FEDEX will no longer accept handguns from private individuals for shipping. They will only accept handguns from FFL’s. What a bunch of BS. There is practically no way for a private individual to ship a handgun anymore ! This needs to change ! This literally means you have to go thru an FFL even if you need to return your handgun to a manufacturer for repair- what a qrock !

If you bring your firearm to ffl and let them handle packing and shipping they charge for that. There is paperwork that goes from sending ffl to receiving ffl. All this info is on ATF’s website by the way. It’s where I got educated on this. And talking to my ffl.
On the subject of registration, if you have older guns that have never been registered, and I know there are a lot of firearms out there passed down from PawPaw, AtF will want them registered. And all that info is on the paperwork sent from your ffl. Again, this is from ATF website.
Hope this helps.
