Shot with the father in law this past weekend. 30+ years in the military. Took maybe three minutes before I got flagged with a handgun.

Let's just say I shut our range time down immediately.

Why do people, even knowledgeable people, not understand the simple rule of DON'T point a gun at anything you aren't willing to kill or destroy?

I'm very patient with new shooters, but the one thing that makes my tone go from helpful to harsh dad voice is when they point the gun where it shouldn't go.

The only funny part of this was watching a guy twenty years my senior damned near snap to attention

But seriously: you can skip damned near all other safety rules if you just follow that one simple one.

You did right, I call that shite out immediately as well. It pisses me off when somebody responds with "but it isn't loaded" or something like that.

One of the most safety conscious shooters I know was in the military. The least (who I no longer hunt or shoot with) was also in the military

I imagine it went something like this

And yeah, I'm at my local indoor range at least once a month, and every single time there's some frickhead not keeping his firearm pointed down range, and the range safety officer is banging on the plexiglass to get his attention.

"STOP POINTING A GOD DAMNED GUN AT EVERYONE"

Wife clocked his handling immediately and walked my little boy to the truck. She knew my reaction was going to be firm. I had the same reaction with her little cousin who's a "gun nut" and somehow incompetent.

Its Crazy how often this happens. I now understand why they put bullet proof glass at indoor ranges between lanes

That scene immediately came to mind after reading the OP's post.

Possible old age getting to him?

A dementia afflicted person isn't someone I'd want handling loaded firearms around me or mine.

100% agree.

The gun never crosses a human path. It is always loaded. It is always about to fire. ALWAYS.

If you abide those simple rules, you and others will be safe.

I also don't like going out recreationally shooting with friends that really want any measure of beer beyond 2 before you set out. Don't drink and shoot. Treat it with the respect it deserves.

I could -never- work at a gun range.

They do qualifying for security guards at my range. You wanna see idiots? Most of these people shouldn't be allowed within 10 feet of a firearm.

Went to the range (outdoor) about 2 months ago. Was shooting the shite with the range master. We were talking about how there are a lot of crazy people in society these days. He says. " You want to see crazy? I'll show you crazy. Just show up to that rifle range anytime during October"

Then he says, " I'm convinced I will either have a heart attack or get shot "

I got flagged by a black woman several times during my CWP class. She had bought a CCY pistol and I swear to Jesus she’d never handle a gun in her life. You know the dividers between shooters? Let’s just say I never stepped back from mine the entire shooting portion of the class even though they asked us to when we were finished. I think the insutructor knew what was going on but he didn’t say anything.

Would’ve been rayciss to point that out. Did she use the black and decker shooting position?

I get the seriousness, but if he accidentally did it one time and you flew off the handle and went home, you're crazy. Especially with a family member.

My business partner is an ex-Ranger. He will not go near a gun range. Just too many idiots.

All you have to do is look up if they have some kind of cover over the shooting benches for either pistols or rifles Hundreds of holes up there.

I have my own range in the pasture. I firmly corrected him, it happened again, the rebuttal was it wasn't loaded (it was). I packed up all my guns and put them in the truck.

I have no interest in looking down the barrel of a pistol repeatedly.

Never heard it called flagged before. We always called it sweeping or swept.
But yeah, I'm serious as a heart attack if you sweep me. I warn everyone thats coming out to shoot with me that this is the way it's going to be if you do it. So don't do it. I'll do it if I see you sweep someone else too. And keep your finger off the goddamn trigger.

I encourage EVERYONE to be that guy and call that shite out immediately when you see it. You can do it playfully as long as everyone's an adult and understand the danger. But if that's not getting it, volume rises.
