I’m in SW MS and that’s usually when I plant. Anything earlier is a huge risk for army worms. Lots of comments about waiting for rain to plant….just plant and cover seeds, no harm will come if rain doesn’t happen for a bit.

We had to do this last year since there was no rain at all in SWMS. The plots turned out just fine without the rain.

That is why I just went ahead and did mine. Last year I did the last week of September and it did well. I like to have my stuff done prior to bow season starting.
I'll go and reseed the second weekend of October to make it really plush.

Guy just showed up at my place and will be clearing my lower field this week. Has a skid steer with a mulching head. It's very grown up with a lot of small trees and weeds. He's clearing off around 15-20 acres.
Its way too dry and hot right now to try plant anthing anyway,
I plan on spraying it and then will try and disk up some of it in the coming weeks and will get a portion of it planted.

I dont guess yall have a lot of turkey or hogs. If I just plant and cover I’ll lose all seed due to stupid turkey wiping out my seed!

Update: Day 9 after planting without a drop of rain with highs hovering around 95-100 degrees. I’m likely cooked. It is what it is.

Im in south ms (walthall/pike co line) i never plant til 2nd or 3rd wk of oct. Too hot, too dry. It either comes up and army worms destroy, or it comes up and is scorched. Easier to just wait

The heat has finally broke here. Hopefully no more highs in the 90s.
Still way to dry to even think about trying to plant anything. Plus, I will have a lot of clean up to do before I think about planting anything,

We finally got 1.8 inches of rain Monday night. Going to check the status on Saturday. Glad to finally get rain though

About to toss out 50 lbs of oil seed radish seeds and 50 lbs of triple 13 into a jungle of dog fennel and countless other volunteer weeds. Then fire up this ragged, old Ford and bush hog as low as I can on top of seeds. Let the rain next week do its magic and let the deer eat what they want but hopefully after the big radish bust this compacted soil up first. May good luck smile on all plot planters this weekend!

Planning on planting next weekend in north Louisiana if the rain forecast is accurate. This is earlier than I usually plant so we’ll see what happens.

Got that completed. May come sit downwind of one of these plots Friday morning with a turkey chair and xbow? It’s bologna sammich and Miller time now.

We are planting on Oct 24 at home. I’ll have everything disked and ready to go. We were going to the 17th but the kids have ACT that day and they want to plant.

I threw seed out in 3 of our 10 plots this evening and passed the bush hog over them to cover em.
Dang high school fishing and weather forecast has me questioning when to plant remainder of plots.
If I hold out (probably will) looking like Halloween weekend before I get seed in ground on our better plots.
I have zero issue planting late due to plants being less hardy late season.

I think I’m gonna try for Oct 9/10. I’ve bush hogged twice and disced once but it was dry. Finally getting some rain. Have 7 small plots I wanna disc again, drag, lime/fert/seed, then cover.
