October 11-17 planting for the tallest grains and pray for rain too.

I used to always plant as close to October 15 as possible and it always worked out.
Over the last five years we have had some years where that wasn't the best timing due to rain. I also have a lot of clay hill top fields vs a lot of bottom land fields. There is a huge difference in moisture requirements and while that seems plainly obvious it took a few years to realize this in practice that they can't always be planted at the same time.
So we plant mid October after we have had a rain to help the dirt and before another rain coming. We then come back and side dress with nitrogen approximately 2 weeks later when we can time it before a rain. This has led to our best fields yet in fall and summer. This year I will have a bumper harvest of summer cash crops doing this.
