you are a mile deep in the woods, it took you an hour and a half to go that mile. You've done drank all your liquids, DGAF if you even see a deer, and you think to yourself if I kill one I got to get it and all this crap back to the truck. All kind of things run through my head like can I sleep all night in this tree and start fresh in the morning, who can come get me? Can I hit the river and swim to the other side and have the ole lady come swoop me up?

I like doing things that take a little more effort than most are willing to do, the reward just means a lot, but damn if it doesn't make me go from Fred Bear to Richard Simmons some days.

Hardly anyone hunts back in the woods these days. On Public land they do but private leased land its a different story.

I rarely hunt in the evenings anymore because I don't want to be quartering and packing a deer out in the dark and getting home at midnight

Lol. I feel your pain as I sit here in an office chair in a nice cozy boxstand drinking a cold beer. And if I do happen to shoot one, I have to walk 100 yards back to the truck and drive right up to the deer to load it.

To hell with all that roughing it. I’m too old and out of shape, but cudos to you guys that do it.

Maybe you have been hunting too much or have killed too many?
I had a stretch where just because of work I was able to put in over 52hunts one deer season and was starting to feel like I didn’t like it. Shot a real good 9pt on like hunt 53 and realized that I was so focused on trying to kill that I was missing in on just the simple things.
I then had a stretch where work didn’t allow me to make several openers and now just the excitement of the opener is like a new hunter.
I told my wife I’m 46 and if I’m lucky I only have about 30 openers left in me and I’m going to do my best to never miss one of them!!

Used to be mad enough at em to hunt alone for a week. Now I don't care to go to the camp unless some podnuhs are up there to BS with. Kind of liking the comradery part more than the kill part nowadays.

Used to hunt every weekend. Friday morning through Sunday evening without missing a hunt. Now I'll drive up Friday for an evening hunt then a Saturday morning hunt and come back home. Only do a full weekend 4 or 5 times a year now.

Ha! Definitely not the case! I think it is because I get so little opportunity to go these days that when I do go I want to kick the door down and go full bore so I can make it count. I don't really have that solid padnuh to go along with me. I have my dad who will go, but hunt 100 yards from the road (and kill some dinks) and a couple of flakey friends. So I'm usually alone. Good thing I love nature and noticing unusual trees and shite out there most walk right by.

I worked shift work my entire career, so I always had private land to hunt so that I could get there quickly on a work day.

Retired now and hunt the weekdays. Still love it.

Passed up a lease this year because of how difficult the conditions were to even get a gear out if I did get one down. 1 mile swamp run, no fourwheeler access, and then a 300 yard canoe run with a deer? I'll pass.

I still enjoy being in the woods but enjoy the prep as much as the hunt . The tractor and dozer work give me more pleasure than the shooting of a deer. I enjoy that but it’s more fun for me to change the land for the better so my family has better chances.

Like I said, I mostly hunt box stands and 90% of the time it’s just me and my son hunting on family land that’s been in our family since before the civil war. It’s been split up and mostly sold and all we have is 80 acres left. He’s 18 now and we like to come and sit around the camp, hunt, talk about history and mostly just enjoy ourselves.

It’s just a bonus that it’s easy hunting and we see plenty of deer.

Everybody finds their own thrill. For me it's all hunting, no prep. My favorite saying to my dad is "get ya arse in da woods". Yesterday I got a late start, wreck on the interstate delayed me by about 25 min also. I was laying in my nice warm bed yesterday telling myself to not go.

But then the Goggins in me told myself that the days I dont feel like going are the days I SHOULD go, so I did. Still enjoyed it, just wasn't into it 100%like usual.

Got halfway into a last resort public swamp and forgot how much further 100 yards is in gumbo mud up to your thighs, waders, decoys, and a sled. bout halfway I was wishing I stayed home. Back in the day it would have been nothing, got too used to boat or fourwheeler to the blind and hunting water that is drained most of the year.

It’s all about camaraderie and family these days. When I was younger I would sleep in my truck all weekend. I only sat twice so far this year. Season opened thanksgiving day and I went that morning out of tradition. I spent the rest of the weekend cooking, sipping beers, and hanging out with family. Me and a buddy and our two 4 year olds kids built a ground blind yesterday afternoon. We kept threatening to go get in a stand but got another beer and another pop sickle. It was the best weekend I’ve had in a while.

I hunt public land in South MS where the season is open for 3 months before the rut even gets cranked up. I used to go so hard so early that I didn’t have much left for the last month of the season. Now I don’t get mad at them until January. I’ll still go up to the camp in the early season, but I’m not hunting all day on Sat and Sun two months before the rut starts.

I know what you are saying there! I'm not as mad at them anymore myself. Where I do most of my hunting they are midday movers mostly, and then right before dark. So I used to walk out there in the pitch black, get up in a tree and by the time 7 am rolled around I felt like I had been in the stand forever.

Now, mostly because I've adopted the theory of only hunting the most recent sign, I head in right at gray light with no flashlight. Kind of scout my way in and then hang and hunt. Sometimes I'm done at noon, sometimes I'll stay all day. If I come out at noon or 1 I head back in about an hour and a half before dark. It's been more enjoyable I find. My deer sightings have gone up.

I have a couple of what I call 100% stands, I only want to make the trek when I wake up feeling 100. I went to one of those Sunday but only felt about 60% lol. Broke my own rule and had to suck it up.

Why don’t you give up on the public land and find a lease where you can spend more time and you don’t have to go full bore. Look hunting in a box stand on a private lease isn’t questioning anyone man hood.

Maybe the reason why ppl don’t want to go is bc of the public land hunting. Not everyone is set up for that. Plus ppl with little time want a better chance at seeing deer so the run cameras with feeders or feed thrown out. Letting the cameras do the scouting for u while you’re not there.

My heart goes out to y’all guys that hunt public. I been lucky enough to have some decent private places to deer and duck hunt.
