I did a search and couldn't find where this topic has been discussed lately.

How many of y'all wear ear protection hunting? I never have but after eating with some older family members on thanksgiving and screaming across the table at them, I'm considering. I figure you can't ever get your hearing back and I don't see how anywhere can be worse for ears than in a steel pit blind with 6 shotguns going off.

What do y'all use ? I've been reading about some high-end custom plugs that look like hearing aids that seem like they would be more comfortable and you can hear talking.

I've been wearing the cheap ol foam plugs on a string. Better than nothing at all. This year I've tied them on my hunting hat so I'll always have them and don't lose them.

the orange foam plugs are the best in terms of noise reduction as far as affordable options go, better than the big ear muffs too. not sure about the high end electronic ear plugs though.

I want to get some of the ones, military I think, that are double sided and one side lets nothing through and the other side lets through sound under a certain decibel level. I wanna say I've found them only for like $20.

Shotguns were never a problem for my hearing. I could go shoot all day long and not have any ill effects

.45s hurt my ears more than any other caliber. They hurt to the point of pain. I have been affected for a few days after only a couple of shots. Only wear ear plugs when shooting them specifically.

The foam earplugs work better than anything else for me. And they're cheap, which is good because I'm always losing them.

Not sure if you're talking about earplug style or earmuff style. I've heard that the inexpensive filtered earplug style designed to allow conversation, but block louder sounds like gunshots, are often inadequate for noise reduction. Going up to earplugs with electronics might work well for conversation and protection, but the price goes way up. For now, I'm sticking with cheap disposable foam plugs.

I've tried a good many, I think one pair was over 100. Just didn't think they did well with the constant noise of a boat motor. I went back with the foam plugs. I keep one in my right ear at all times while hunting and depending on where I'm situated I use the left also. Pisses the guys off, because I talk lower they say and I can't hear sometimes when they are turned away from me watching birds. That said, I'm not the one itching my ear after somebody shoots over the top of them.

You should wear something even if you are shooting .22s.

If shooting outdoors I use over the ear muffs.

I hope to get a pair of the electronic for Christmas.

If I am shooting indoors, I wear a pair of foam plugs in addition to the muffs.

This. I got the one's rated for 24 decibels, which is more than most foamies. I wore them at the range a few times and they work great. Also use them at work and around airplanes.

Ive had trouble with my left ear for a few years now and Im only 34. I have to use something or my ear will ring for weeks. Guess its from too much shooting, but one time in particular, sighting in my 30-30 off my brothers back porch, started it and Im very sensitive to it now.

I use both, depending on what Im doing. I use the foam plugs alot when range shooting for comfort and ease. I use muffs when hunting, so I can leave them off til needed, then get them on fast. I will say this, if you want to try muffs for hunting, they can get in your way, so practice a few shots first.

Hey guys,
Coming from an old man like myself, do yourself a favor and WEAR some sort of adequate hearing protection whenever you're shooting any type of firearm. I have permanent hearing loss from NOT doing so. The main culprit for me was shooting handguns, but ANY firearm will cause permanent hearing loss if you shoot it enough.

When target shooting, I use the best foam plugs (usually will have a noise reduction rating, NRR, or 33 or so) PLUS over the ear muffs. You can buy a cheap pair of Caldwell electronic muffs (previously linked) for <$30. If you use only ear plugs, there will be some potentially damaging gunfire transmitted to the ear through the bones outside the ear.

When on the stand, I use a pair of Walker Game Ear electronic over the ear muffs. Some people use plugs and muffs and just crank the volume up.

When I'm squirrel hunting, I usually use a pair of the stiffer, rubber ear plugs and put them in just before shooting. It takes a 30 seconds or so for the foam plugs to expand and get the max NRR.

Many of the non electronic ear plugs that supposedly block out only loud noises don't have much NRR capability.

When I first read about handgun hunters using hearing protection in the field I kinda chuckled to myself, thinking how silly it was.......Years later I find myself wishing I'd done likewise.

Thanks for the help. Its really shooting in pit blinds that has started getting to me. The bi ear muffs just seem like they would be a burden to haul around and wear especially when trying to wear a warm hat or soemthing. But I do recognize the fact I really need to start doing something before it's too late

I have a pair of Walkers Game Ear HD. I didn't wear them this weekend and sure wish I did. I can assure you I'll have them on for the next hunt.

They work really well.
