duck hunters , which kind of duck dog?

Well, long story but my hunting dog can't hunt anymore and without her the first split has been tough to say the least, but I think I'm getting another one this spring. I've got too, its just not the same this year. Any preference on what kind of lab (english/American, etc..) or color, I'm thinking about maybe getting a red lab but I don't know anything about them. I've had two so far, a chocolate and a yellow that were both successes but had to do the bare minimum.
I assume Labs are the only great duck dogs

4 pages minimum!!!
Never seen a difference between chocolates blacks or yellows. Personally I would stay away from the
“Designer” colors such as charcoal/red/ and 2019s burnt umber lab that I’m sure is going to come out!!!
Find someone who has a dog you like for what you like to do an get one from that line!! A good chance that the traits and health from that line will be present in the one you get. It’s not a lock but a good chance!!!

You know what they say about assuming.. And that saying holds 100% true here.

To each their own I suppose but my red and every other one that I’ve meet have been exceptionally well behaved & healthy dogs. Great on retrieves as well so that’s a plus. I would be lying if I said I didn’t partially choose him because of his coat color.

by far the best duck dog is a silver lab

Not questioning your dog as I have seen some great reds. Just saying the tendency of people breeding one line to another strictly on color alone can result in some negative results. If it was me I would be trying to find a dog off of a line that I had a proven track record from someone I knew. Not just an add saying “cool color” “ parents hunt”.

Ask Sushi. He’s the expert at this particular topic.

Ole Boy is right. You aren't gonna go wrong with any of the original 3 colors. The other colors are still pretty new and the long term health effects are unknown. Now they could end up just as amazing as we find out down the road.
I have a black lab who is phenomenal and honestly feel bad bc we live in the Piedmont of NC and he may retrieve 50 ducks a year bc of how bad the hunting is around here. He has his SH and probably we could do his MH just don't have time or money.
Here is my thought process find a friend who is willing to breed or is planning on it that has a great dog. That's an easy way to do it. Some ppl go to extremes and go way deep into genetics and pedigree. My dog came from what I call white trash. No titles nothing. He came from an extremely smart bitch and a stud of a chocolate who's only attributes was his body. He was a fricking tank.
I'm a personal fan of blacks mainly because they are easy to hide and black was one of the closest true color to the original lab line. A big thing for me is the color of the parents noses. The darker the better.
I know ppl get all hung up on these AKC Titled dogs but for normal duck hunters their offspring can be very difficult bc of how high strung and how much drive they have. A lot of these dogs can get hurt and be dangerous hunting if not around ppl who handle them regularly. They can be the best labs on earth if you understand how to handle a dog with that drive.
I love the concept of the dude who runs Southern Oak Kennels he has dogs who have a much milder tempered background and they turn out to be the best hunting dogs and not necessarily the best trial dogs. They are calmer and just as eager to retrieve. I like American labs but love the head of a big English.
My lab is a mix of an english and an American lab. He has a beautiful block head and a tall strong body. He's only 75lbs. Stay away from huge labs thats not healthy. A healthy male is at max 70 to 85 lbs.

Is she too fat to hunt this year?
You can buy a puppy off of my dog in the spring. You’ll get to experience what it’s like to hunt with a real dog.

I have a golden. She is my friend and I like her.
She also picks up a ton of ducks.

Get a dog that doesn't shed. One of my criteria when searching for my 2nd dog after having golden retrievers for years. This makes the wife happy and he's a good dog.
