Are there any medium sized poodle mixes worth looking at? Not for ducks-just a great pet. I am bout to lose a 14 year old.

We have a some 60-75 lb golden doodles in our family and friends that are a ridiculously good pet. If you luck up they don't shed a bit(more poodle than golden) or they shed a little but nowhere near as bad as a lab does.

Very smart/sweet/well behaved dogs.

Get to wear two scars on my bicep for rest of my life thanks to yet another sketchy choc. lab that snapped and bit me. Best labs I've hunted over were yellows, followed by blacks, just my experience.

That said, I hunt a golden that had no hunting pedigree, trained myself with absolutely zero experience. He's got a really good nose, and picks up all our ducks.....and when he goes home my 2 year old pulls on his lips, ears, tail, legs, etc. and he just lays there. Checks all the boxes

Was a few days after Katrina in mandeville area, was helping neighbor clean up yard. Went to get tool from neighbor's garage near this dog and it was just hangin out laying on ground. Reached for hanging rake or something and it just snapped up at me and grabbed my bicep, immediately released. Had to go to ER to get flushed out and patched up (while helicopters flew in with people that had cut their damn leg with chainsaws).

Lets make sure a few things are 100% clear here, just facts:

1.) this dog knew me for a number of years from coming and going at it's home, I was far from a stranger. It had a long history of just being sketchy, would routinely nip (or worse) at people.

2.) Yea, was not long after Katrina so it could have been a bit shook up.

3.) It eventually bit someone else a year or so later and owner had to put it down if I recall correctly.

I'm not saying all chocolates bite; I'm saying most chocolates I've known have always been a bit squirrely in their behavior, like you never knew when they might bite instead of lick. Whereas I've always been comfortable around black and yellow labs, yellows usually having the softest temperament in the camp or in the blind.

statistically speaking labs do make up a lot of bites that get reported... 35 years of being the most popular breed leads to some of that.. as well as many many poor breedings(over breeding recessive genes, etc)

He’s great, I just haven’t been hunting him because I don’t have a place to hunt this year. It sucks knowing I have a dog born to hunt and he just stays in the yard all day. I’m gonna try to get on some birds next split.

The good is that he’s got unreal natural ability and drive.

The bad is that he’s a little crazy, but I’m gone from 6-5 every day so it’s my fault. He’s outside all day so that makes me feel a little better
