Cyst on my dog's ear

So a couple weeks ago I noticed a small fluid filled bump on my dog's ear and didn't pay it much mind. Well last night I notice a groan in size considerably and then this morning in about an hour it grew to the size of a golf ball. I was playing on draining it when I got home however the girlfriend is wanting me to bring him to the vet. Anyone have any experience with these?

If you can hold him still, just lance it with a razor blade. A little nick and it should start draining. Then flush it out and keep it clean.
If he's jumpy, you may want to have a professional do it so you don't cut yourself or him more than you intended to.
I've done one on a cows neck before about the size of a soft ball. It stunk so bad, but damn was it satisfying.

It's filled with blood. Sometimes dogs get them from shaking or scratching their ears a lot. Basically, the skin and cartilage separate and it fills with blood.
My wife's mini schnauzer had one once. Just before the vet lanced it, the dog shook its head and it EXPLODED. The vet tech holding her had a blood streaked across her face. It was on the floor, table, and at least two walls. It was pretty gross, but also funny as hell to see the poor tech holding her tight, eyes closed, face in a grimace, and blood everywhere.
The vet didnt' have to lance it. But, I had to keep medicine on it, and kind of keep it "squeezed out" until it healed.
The end.

It's a hematoma. I'm sure their is a more technical term for it. Likely caused by scratching ear and/or shaking head. I found one on my golden a few months ago. Just meds for my pup, no draining needed. It has slowly gone away. You should take the dog to a Vet

does the dog have ear mites? other reason to be shaking its head?

THIS!
It's a hematoma as said before. Your dog might have mites in his ear or allergic to something. It may be a yeast/bacteria infection in response to an allergen...causing him to flop his ears. Serious question: Does the ear smell funny? If so it could be a yeast infection.

The more technical term is aural hematoma. LOL.

If the dog has mites, melt a few tablespoons of coconut oil and put a few drops of teatree oil in it and stir. Put a tablespoon inside each ear and massage.
He's gonna be pissed. But he won't get mites anymore or have ear infections.
As for the hematoma, you can drain or bring him to the vet.

Go to Vet, let them remove and test. The peace of mind is worth it.

My lab had this before but not from mites. It was all from bad arse allergies. Take your pup to the vet.

Does it look like this?

Once my dog had a cyst and I posted on the OB asking for advice because my girlfriend made me. Follow the advice of the OB against my better judgement because she read the thread and brought the dog to the vet. It was a cyst. Vet said we can have a blood party and lance it or give it a few more days and let it go away on it's own. It did.
Dog ears bleed like nothing I've ever seen before. Gallons of blood for hours. It'll be a major biblical mess if you lance it

This, but draining works faster to heal.

One of my mastifs had this and I would drain it with a needle until it eventially healed. It feels thicker tham the other with scar tissue but it looks normal.
