re: Italy airfare booked *new question* - SurfOrYak
Here’s another option. Take the train from Rome airport to downtown train station. Taxi or subway from there to hotel. The airport train system in Rome is excellent. ...

re: Anyone ever taken an Amtrak train to anywhere? - SurfOrYak
The food is rough on that train
That was a correct statement, until just recently. I was on CNO a couple of months ago, and the dining car was back in full service with much better quality of food than previously. They were serving meals "to go", so you could either stay in dining...

re: Sleeping in car at Elmer's Island parking lot. - SurfOrYak
Grand Isle State Park is still closed (RV housing being provided for displaced residents and/or workers?), and no announcements from state on its opening date. The rumors are that RV camping will not re-open until this fall. But the beach camping may not open till later depending on beach/dune damag...

re: Amtrak: Slidell-Birmingham; $67 R/T - SurfOrYak
Sleeping cars with bedrooms/roomettes are in separate cars from coach. For one person, a roomette is plenty of space. It has two bunks, but it is not roomy enough for more than one person, IMO. The bedrooms are obviously larger and much better for 2 passengers, and include a bathroom/shower stall....

re: Is this one of the worst times to retire? - SurfOrYak
Sure, conditions are not ideal. But regardless, you retire on schedule. You should have planned for an annual 4% max draw on your lump sum, through market ups and downs. Oh, and there's this. I retired a few years ago and am having a lot more fun living than when I was working....

re: Wife and I Are Thinking About A Trip To Italy Next Year For Our 30th Anniversary - SurfOrYak
There are all kinds of options for travel in Italy. You you fly into Rome and make that your base. Take trains from there to all the cities mentioned. There’s even train service to Palermo in Scilly. This is European train travel, much better than what we have in US. ...

re: Home Generator Cost Question - SurfOrYak
Gage was great for the order and install of our Cummins 30 kW generator. It was installed last summer, just before Ida. Had to run for 6 days straight during that power outage. Gage was backed up on oil changes during that week after Ida, so I did the first oil/filter change myself at recommended 50...

re: Freaking Bamboo - SurfOrYak
I’m with you—complete removal of root ball and rhizomes is the best way to go. Not a chemical person. The best tools for removal: 1. sawsall with long limb-pruning blade (to cut stalks and rootball) 2. Long (69”), heavy (16#) post hole digging pole—it’s a metal pole with a flattened end that will...

re: Discovered a leak in the wall behind my tub faucet - SurfOrYak
Sir, I really like the look of that tub and tile. But the tile layout pattern on that back wall looks odd. The run on that back wall is too short to use the usual “every third (or fourth) row” stagger tile pattern for floors? Which in this case has led to cut-tile lengths that are conspicuously une...
