I've been in Dallas for a while now and me and the wife and sons really miss crawfish. None of the restaurants here do them right and then they charge $9.99 lb or more

30qt is gonna be tight for a half sack but it should fit. I would get at least a 60qt, you can get a burner and pot from academy for prolly 150$ish and that will give you enough of a pot for when you get better friends who like crawfish.

Are you Dallas specifically? I'm in Arlington and there are a few places that carry live. Price is probably $4.50/lb or higher. I'm shooting to do a few sacks near the end of the month. Don't want to think about costs, but haven't done any in 2 yrs, so I'm ready.

I'm in North Dallas. I can't find anyplace that will do a boil anything like La. I'm finding most places won't soak them at all
Figured my best bet is to just do myself. I'm seeing about $4.50 lb live too. Hoping they come down a little soon.
I'm thinking I may just get a turkey fryer set up for the 4 of us. 15lbs tops is what I'm looking to boil. Don't want to invest $200 in a mediocre setup yet.

IF you go the route of an Academy package deal, change the regulator ASAP. I thought a 10 lb regulator wouldnt be a big deal, burned through half a tank of propane just trying to get my water to boil.

Here in La. the prices drop a bit after Easter Sunday, then usually pick up around Mother's Day, then drop again into the summer months.

There's a Chris's specialty meats in frisco that is allegedly legit. I'd give them a shot for boiled.
As far as a setup, the 80qt pot and burner setup from academy is fine. As mentioned, swap for a 40psi regulator.

Yeah, I'd go bigger than that.
Does anyone actually sell live by the pound and not a whole sack? Never seen that myself.

Now my sister-in-law wants a boil for her birthday, so will just go with a regular setup now.
I'm looking at 80qt size. Any difference between aluminum vs stainless steel? I see a Bayou Classic brand stainless setup for around $270.
The Outdoor Gourmet 80qt is about $170, but aluminum.
Worth it to spend an extra $100 for something I'll use maybe 2-3 times a year?

Buy once cry once, get a good setup and you might use it more than you think.

High Performance Cookers in Covington ships, if you want something better than big box store bought.
They modify the pots to boil extremely fast and the pots are a lot thicker than your normal cheap one.

The price only hurts when you buy the setup. Get the SS pot.
I have a 60 qt. pot for boiling crawfish. I find it best to limit cooking to about 25 lbs at a time. A whole sack (~32 lbs) will fit in the pot, but it is hard to stir the crawfish. So for one sack, I do 2 batches. For 2 sacks, 3 patches.
If you already have a Turkey frying pot that should work ok.... but I suggest you boil about 7 to 10 lbs at a time. When you try to boil too many crawfish in a pot, they just don't cook as well.
Do yourself [and your guest] a favor and get a "pre-mix" type burner. Those jet burner are very loud.
1. Get something like this. This will bring a pot to boil fast. .... LINK
2. This size burner would do fine if you are only cooking "small" amounts. I have this burner, and mostly use it for frying fish or boiling a few pounds of shrimp or crabs. This burner really puts out too much heat for frying fish...... so I tried putting small nails in about 1/2 of the burner hole. This blocks the gas flow and allows me to better regulate the "low" flame while frying. ... LINK

Get at least an 80, you can always put 20qts of water in an 80qt pot, you can't put 60qts in a 30 qt pot. I have an 80qt for my travel set up, I can put the burner in the pot and travel with it easily, it also prevents bugs from clogging up your regulator since it is in the pot with a lid on it.

I boil a couple hundred lbs of shrimp every year and usually just 2-3 sacks of crawfish. I got the Academy one as a gift and didn't expect much, but it's been great for the last few years...other than the regulator as mentioned above....

The seafood markets will bust a sack for you most of the time, trucks and roadside vendors or fisherman will not.
For the op questioning wether or not SS or alum pot I have a aluminum pot I bought in 06 and I boil anywhere from 8-12 times a year (crawfish, crabs, shrimp) and it’s perfectly fine. I can’t imagine I’ll burn it out in the next 10-15 years

Interesting. I've asked a few around here, over the years, and they all say no. Sure would make things easier when we want some for just the family.

If you are going to boil at least once a year for the next 20 yrs, get a 100 qt stainless pot and a good burner. This will save you a ton of time and headache. The 80 is just too small imo. I usually boil at least 4 sacks at a time. The 100 fits a whole sack and all the accoutrements.

I live in Frisco, let me know what time to show up. I’ll gladly help boil, clean up, and bring some nice appetizers too.
