Because that’s the same as gut shooting a lab because it didn’t retrieve.

Shoot the dog in the gut?

So manly the business he took care of.

A training aid versus a gut shot. That's not a good slippery slope argument. Don't try to make it one to justify a gut shot

Well that's what i do a quick bullet to the head but i was just trying to show that there are circumstances where a dog's life has to be taken even though it's not sick and dying or suffering. Also i have no use for a dog that does not hunt and they are dealt with in the same way. I do not condone what the guy in the OP did but i definitely understand his frustration. He just went about it all wrong.

You don't think there's a slippery slope?

Tell me what the same guy out in New Mexico is gonna say about me head shooting a stray dog?

You think he's gonna wave his hand and say "aw naw man, that's ok, he needed killin'"?

What the guy did to his dog is sorry, no doubt about it. I believe that he should probably get charged with some misdemeanor and pay $1,000 - $1,500 fine.

Does it put hunter in a terrible light? yes it does, and I despise that.

BUT, if they want this guy hung from the neck because he shot a dog, I'm having a hard time thinking they wouldn't want the same done to me.

It really doesn't work that way. At the end of the season if you have 3 or 4 old dogs you want to get of, it's not easy to find people who want old hunting dogs.

The dog was only 3 (not an old dog at all), and there are plenty of lab rescue and animal welfare organizations who will help you re-home your dog no matter the age; they're all over the internet and social media.

I took a 3 year old black lab who would not hunt (she was gun shy) from a fellow who was decent enough to find a home for her, and had the dog 11 years before she succumbed to cancer.

Anybody who kills a dog simply because it won't hunt is a POS without debate.

What somebody does with their dog that wont hunt is their business.

I personally havent done it but there are many who have.

Dogs are not people and we need to get off this path towards them being treated as such. Keep it up and soon you wont be able to keep your lab outside when its above 80 degrees or below 40.

I don't think treating an animal humanely that was domesticated by humans thousands of years ago is a far stretch. Making certain acts against them a crime is not equating them with humans either. If you're going to shoot a domesticated animal because you don't have the skills as a human to make it do whatever trick you need it to do for you, then you shouldn't own a domesticated animal. Maybe try hunting without them.

Perhaps Mr. fricknut McDogkiller was too lazy or too stupid to properly train the animal to retrieve properly. My bet is on the latter, not the former.

Where is the line drawn between shooting a dog and shooting a deer/squirrel/duck/etc.?

What line are you talking about? He shot the dog apparently because he was angry. I don't think I know a single person that hunts ducks, squirrels, quail... anything at all... because they are "mad" or "angry" at them. Not sure what hunting has to do with anyone shooting their own dog? Your analogy fricking sucks.

If you were "mad" at those crawfish you boiled then you got bigger problems than shitty logic on a message board.

How many dog birthday parties you have this weekend? You and the wife taking your dog for a picnic before bed bath and beyond? You sure are mad. How many dogs are you fostering right now? You got some of those pee pads in the kitchen so Princess can tinkle inside while you are at work?

But it was his dog.

Then you don't know many hunters

The OP, you, and all of the bleeding hearts on this board don't care about whether someone was mad at the animal or not. Y'all are just here to crucify the human. I don't agree with the man shooting his dog in anger, but I'm sure not going to call him the devil for shooting a dog (again, his own dog).

Also, dude probably didn't mean to gut shot the dog. Steel shot is expensive. Although, someone with a shitty dog is probably a shitty hunter and therefore may not be able to hit what he's aiming at.

My grandpa had a farm so I've seen some of the "business" that men have to take care of when the occasion calls for it as I was growing up.

It was always done expediently with forethought.

Gut shooting a dog twice out of anger is not a man taking care of business.

Like others have said, give him a fine or whatever, but know that this guy is a little piece of shite.

I can argue with a tree and never win, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong. I'm not going to change anyone's mind that wants to believe a dog's life is more important than a human's.

but muh manhood because I don't shoot dogs..

If your reading comprehension skills are below the average plant baw I'll summarize what I've said. He shouldn't have killed the dog, I don't agree with it, and I don't think he should be executed as some have argued.

I know this was a fairly young dog that he shot and is terrible. But I was referring to dogs that get too old to physically hunt.

We have a couple of our beagles that just can't physically cut it anymore. One is the best deer dog we've ever had. Last year we would turn him loose with the pack and he would almost always be the one to jump the deer, but once the race started someone would always have to stay behind to catch ole Red 30 minutes later. This season we'd put him out and the old fella could barely make it 100 yards so we had to retire him. He'll probably just live out his remaining days in his pen because no one has the heart to shoot him.
