He shot his dog for not retrieving a duck. It's despicable and I think most hunting dog owners will rightfully vilify him for it, but I'm gonna stop short of calling for him to be hanging from the gallows. "Felony extreme cruelty to animals" I think is what the charge is. Where is the line drawn between shooting a dog and shooting a deer/squirrel/duck/etc.? I was pretty damn cruel to some animals once. Had about 35 lbs of them crammed into a sack before I poured them alive into a pot of boiling water. Another time I shot one out of the sky on his way to eat breakfast then bashed his head on the side of a boat to finish him off. Another time I let some dogs chase a deer until its tongue was hanging out then I shot him, then the dogs chased him down and held him down on the ground biting and tearing him apart until I could get to him and shoot him again. Be careful what you wish for.

You sound like you're fun at parties.

I think the line is a companion vs dinner.

The owner let that dog down. Not the other way around. If he would have put the time/money into training it properly, he wouldn't have shot it like a psychopath. He deserves whatever he gets.

I don't know that I could ever shoot my dog if it wasn't close to death already but I know people do and I think they should. I've never had to cross that bridge.

If you truly don't know the difference then you probably shouldn't be hunting.

I agree. Animals are animals. God didn't give some animals more status than others. They are all animals.

Some on this board would shite brick if they went back 50 years to see what old timers did to dogs that wouldn't hunt or useless farm dogs. Keeping around an extra mouth to feed and getting nothing in return just wasn't an option.

I think you misunderstood me. I know the difference. It's as clear as day. My point was that there are many groups that would argue killing a cow or deer is the same as killing a dog. I'm not going to stand on my high horse and say the person killing the dog is evil because I don't have the energy to defend myself from idiots who want to vilify me for killing a deer.

The difference is he knew this dog for 3 years. He raised this dog. This dog knew him as alpha male. This dog looked to him as a leader. This wasnt some deer in the woods or a duck in the sky.

I don't really give a shite what you think, but then again I don't throw my dog birthday parties nor do I consider her a part of the family and include her in Christmas cards, so maybe I'm an a-hole.

That’s the kind of psycho retard we don’t need in this world. Difference in killing a hunting dog and a wild animal is that the dog probably had truste in his owner and was out to have a good time hunting like he was. The dog wasn’t properly trained that’s why it didn’t go get the ducks but I bet you the dog still was having fun on the hunt and his peace of shite owner kills him for no reason. If the guys hunting buddy would have blown that arse holes head off for doing such a thing I would still feel more sorry that the dog got killed.

You're a truly sick frick. Really. You are. Are you related to this slob who murdered his dog?

You don't know me, never met me, but made this assumption based upon the fact I don't want a person being executed for killing a dog? Jesus dude change your tampon.

"Murder", by definition, is restricted to human life.

You terrible attempt to make a point reveals plenty about you, and I apologize for my previous profanity IRT to your horrible post.

ETA: I don't think the guy needs be be executed, either, but an 18 month stint in the joint may get his head right.

I believe tenfoe is making the argument for a target audience scale larger than the OB. In the eyes of a vegan say, what’s the difference between a dog and a deer? They see both equally even though as a hunter you’d eat one of them. I mean shite just go watch one of the handful of documentaries on Netflix about how all living animals “should be treated as humans.” So by you making a differentiation (rightfully so), you’re opening up a path for certain groups to take that totally out of context.

That’s the way I took it.

My uncles were big in to quail hunting and had plenty of high powered bird dogs. They hunted them, quail, on horses with the dogs out front. Was too young to take part but heard stories of a few getting shot if they flushed the birds before they were ready to shoot.

I said the guy is rightfully vilified, shouldn't have shot his dog, but doesn't deserve to be hanged as another poster said. I don't know what you are reading into my posts, but a dog's life is not equal to a human life. I apologize if you think otherwise, but you are categorically wrong.

I don't know this dude. Sounds like he handled the situation pretty poorly. If you are truly done with the dog, you find it a home, or retire it from hunting as a pet, eta: or take care of it like a grown man, quietly and quickly.

The personification of the animal is concerning to me. Anthropomorphism makes me nervous.

The truth is. That dog is not his baby. Not his family. Not a person.

If that ONE guy thats pushing this campaign against this guy can get this guy thrown in jail, what/who does he take on next?

I have a lab, and have long had labs. They live in my house, sleep at my feet and love on my kids. I go in knowing that they will be pet first and bird dog second.

I also know that there are classes of working dogs (which include retrievers) that are just that, working dogs. They arent' "family".

My granddaddy used to raise a pack of walker hounds to hunt deer. If there was a dog that wouldn't hunt, or liked to fight or generally caused problems, he'd get his throat cut and his collar hung on the dog pen.

I believe animal cruelty should be illegal, but we must be very careful. Where does it stop? Feral animals? Trapping?
