I need some trail shoes, but I don’t know jack. Can anyone suggest a good pair that won’t cost too much? I need them for hiking.

I have some salomon goretex which I like a good bit. If you happen to be a veteran you can get them 30 or 40% off through expert voice.

I wear low cut keens. Have found no use for over the ankle boots thus far even packing in up the rocky mountains

shite I did some 14ers in knee deep snow in Asics running shoes

I've got some La Sportiva trail running shoes that I always wear hiking and love them.

I got these off amazon and was a little skeptical for the price. I walked 26 miles over 2 days in Colorado, through snow at times. My feet never hurt and didnt get any blisters. Good socks make a big difference too.

I’ve got Oboz Bridger mid-height boots that I love.

I don’t know what terrain you will be hiking or if you will have a pack, but I spend most of my time hiking in rocky terrain and a trail runner or low top shoe doesn’t cut it for me.

I did a portion of the AT in some boat shoes. I hate how heavy hiking shoes are. Anybody got reqs on ultralight hikers?

Did an 11 mile hike around Monteagle TN recently in On Cloud venture. Extremely light weight with good support.

It really depends on where/when you’re hiking. A regular tennis shoe is fine for short hikes in mild weather. I have a pair of Salomons that have been great. Alta’s have gained popularity with long distance hikers but aren’t very durable, supposedly. Stay away from Goretex for most uses. Put as much research into getting good socks too.

Research ‘approach shoes’ and see if you can pick something up on sale. Very stable and minimalist by design.

I use brooks Cascadia most of the time and have had good luck with solomon as well.

Second the recommendation to look at approach shoes, especially if you'll be on rock much. La Sportiva used to make a shoe that was a combo trail runner/approach shoe that I really liked but I don't think they make it any more.

Also second staying away from gortex unless you will frequently be using them in cold/wet.

Mrs DH got me some On Cloud trail shoes, wore them a full 6 days all over the Tetons this summer. The only things not worn out at the end of each day was my feet and knees. They're pricey and very much "BR fashion", but very comfortable. Also have some Merril over-ankle hiking boots. Seven years old and still looking good. breathable, lightweight, good ankle support, NOT waterproof, would recommend.

Merrell or Keen. I like the high top options for actual hiking over logs and rocks with incline/decline. If it's just walking through trails which may have the occassional stream, rock, log then the low cut options would do just fine.

Keens are nice shoes and well made, but they don't fit my foot. They end up hurting my arches if I wear them too long.

Honestly that's what I use out here 95% of time.

I have a pair of waterproof Columbias that like, but make my feet sweat. I can only really wear them on really cold days.
