re: Caliber for a 13/14 y/o
I re barreled my MK12 AR in 224 Valkyrie for my 12 yr old son( now 13). He dropped a 120lb doe last year with it at 200 yds. Virtuall no recoil and plenty of punch for white tails.

Great post. Thanks for that.

I’m admittedly very new to this. My dad didn’t grow up hunting so he never took me even though I wanted too. Now my son is expressing interest and I don’t want him to miss out because I did. Sorta hoping to change the family tree here.

Sweet! Its the golden age of cheap rifles these days. It used to cost a man a whole paycheck to buy a decent rifle he could count on. These days I'm not sure you could buy an inaccurate rifle if you had to.

I love my Tikkas, but if I was pinching pennies Savage is an incredible value these days.

i got my 7mm-08 at around that age. Its been 15 or so years and its still one of my favorites. Its also a really sound round.

I got the savage model. love it.

I still shoot my break action .243. That is all the gun you need for whitetail.

Got mine at 11 and it is still a killing machine. I am working up some loads using Barnes ttsx 80 grain projectiles at the moment. Going to copper rounds in all our rifles this year. Biggest thing is finding a rifle they aren’t scared to shoot. Less flinching will yield better shot placement

I just bought two boxes of these to try. I'm shooting the 100 grain Federal Premium gameking BTSP now but I like to ballistics and solid copper on the Barnes.

Anyone who says a .243 with 100 gr Remington Core Lokt won't drop a white tail dead in its tracks is ignorant.

If a person can't get a good shot on a deer, then don't take the shot. With any rifle.

A .22 lr will drop a moose in its tracks. Doesn't mean shite bout anything though.

Man one of the best guns for that age in my opinion is a .223 single shot / break over. Good caliber but also very safe and excellent for learning gun safety in the field

Although I guess that was more for like 10 years old. If he’s bigger/stronger and can shoot 243
