This will probably be a Christmas gift this year in 7mm-08.

I bought my son a ruger American in 6.5 creedmoor and slapped a master piece arms muzzle brake on the end. Loud as hell but very minimal recoil. The damn brake was almost half the price of the rifle though

As many here in south, I been shooting since I can hold a gun. Any of those calibers can kill a deer. As far what I prefer for younger shooter be 7-08. Plenty of Ammo even now, mild recall, damn good ballistics, and a gun he can use rest of his life.

Howa makes a youth / adult combo rifle that’s nice.

I got my .270 at age 15 but i was the size of a 12 year old. It hurt when I shot it, but I survived. just make sure he is shooting with something to help brace/stabelize like from a shooting house using a sandbag. Can't have him falling out a deer stand. He will be big before you realize it.

7mm-08 is the one of the best all around caliber. Perfect for anything from deer to black bear and elk. Low recoil. 6.5 creed is also fine. People literally only hate it because of how popular it has become. They have no other reason than they hate how much people have jumped on it in recent years. Completely irrational. And yes, I know 6.5x55 has been getting it done for over 100 years.

Why on earth would you avoid .243 other than it’s not new and trendy?

Still have my Remington youth model 243 and my wife and kids hunt with it now. They have taken a 200 lb 8 pt and a 153 lb hog with it in the last couple years. A well placed 243 round will drop any deer/hog. 90gr ballistic tip flying at 3400 FPS is a nasty little pill. Granted it’s a bit small but unless you are shooting a cannon no rifle will make an instant kill from a bad shot.

Because there's no reason to handicap a kid with something that's liable to not fully penetrate. There are better options that have very manageable recoil with more horsepower. 7mm08, 260 rem, 6.5 creedmoor ( ), 6.5x55 swede, .308 with reduced recoil loads. All are better choices.

Because a beginner hunter needs as much forgiveness without kicking too much. Most hunters who shoot a .243 use the wrong ammo as well, it’s pushing 4000 fps. Lightly constructed pills for varmints are not made for white tails. Will a .243 kill effectively, yes! Just not ideal for a young hunter IMO. I bought my daughter a 7mm-08 X-Bolt when she was 7 and never had an issue.

My point exactly, a ballistic tip going that fast hits a rib or worse a shoulder and you get no penetration. Shoot something bonded or a Barnes copper bullet.

People will probably disagree but I hunted with an old Marlin lever action 30-30 for my entire childhood until early 20s and had no problems. However, our stands weren't set up for super long range shots. I had an old Remington woodmaster 30-06 that had zero recoil. But I am not sure if they still make those. My bolt action .270 on the other hand has a good bit of kick. Fwiw, I'd say look into a .270 or 30-06, it has more dropping power and range than the 30-30 but also is something he/she can grow into. Also, .270 and 30-06 round are typically easy to find (in non-covid conditions at least).

It’s a great round. I’d probably go bolt as I’ve been wanting one in that action.

The same can be said for the 6.5 as well as several other “bad rap” calibers. I grew up shooting a 270 killed a shite pile of deer with 150gr nosler partitions. There were several people that told me that “270s cripple deer” my mentor at the time who had hunted all over the country and got me shooting the right bullets and not shooting the 130gr varmint bullets everyone else was shooting.
I don’t have a 6.5 but it’s hard for me to believe that a 140gr Nosler partion coming out of one at 2800fps is something to poopoo on. Hell we shot the partions in 257roberts and 243 as well and killed a shite pile.
I haven’t even seen a deer shot with a 6.5 but I imagine that the biggest issue is 65yard shots shooting hornady ELDX bullets designed to expand at lower velocity’s at extreme range that the gun was developed for.
But man that black box sure looks cool
