you NEVER leave the boat empty!
this is almost as equally stupid of a diving mistake as the Haynes couple getting left out in the water at the Great Barrier Reef years ago. a least no one died in this case.

Yea there's probably worse things, but patrolling around a rig leg and noiticng your boat passing by on its way down has to suck quite a bit.

How the hell do you get back to the marina?

That's got to be the most "Well... shite!" picture I've ever seen in my life!

Crazy story if all true.

How the hell do you make it all the way out to the rigs without knowing the plug was not in? Did they launch and head straight for the rigs? Seems they would have had to tie off some where to get bait and ice and notice the rear sitting kinda low in the water

if your rolling forward - plug out no water comes in...

ever heard of a rolling bilge?

stop for bait spear fishing?

ice? before launching....

I've seen several $60K trucks that the insurance card got too close to the payment book and spontaneous combustion occurred, could be same situtation

Is it sinking motors down and those are bubbles coming up from the anchor hatch? Trying to figure out the picture? That water is too deep for divers to reach it with air bags I'm assuming? How'd they get back in, someone from the rig?

If he had a warrant out for his arrest, I wouldn't doubt they sank it for insurance money.

The picture is posted upside down. I can make the most sense out of it if I turn the picture upside down and I realize that u can see the waters surface in the top of the picture and that the boat is hanging vertically most likely by the rig hook and the Bible's are going to the surface.

I don't see any red snapper. They must be close to extinction.

yes that's it I agree
the boat is hanging by the tether to the rig

if it was untethered and sinking it would go down so fast you'd have to be ready and waiting with the camera to catch it in a shot

I don't dive so I don't know what the protocol is for leaving the vessel manned or not but I feel like this should at least be common sense. Don't divers generally put out markers in the water letting the public know they are diving? I guess that does little good in situations like this or if some worthless fricktard sees an unmanned boat and decides to steal it.

I fly a dive flag off the boat to let people know that we are diving. I also have a buoy out back that serves as a heads up/grab line. This story just seems crazy and can't wait to hear more details.

So do you generally leave the boat empty?

No we never leave the boat empty. And whoever is on board knows how to alert us if need be. Currents/wind shifting and crewboats who don't care worry me enough. Have few friends who don't dive who love to go out and just fish so works out easy.

Have another upvote. They are one step away from following the Passenger Pigeon and the DoDo Bird.
