Best way to get into deer hunting?

I have never been. None of my family has ever hunted either outside of my uncle and grandad being duck hunters. I am 29 and have a 1 year old who I would like to start hunting with when he is old enough.
What things do I need to do to get started?

Best way is to marry a girl that her family has land and hunts. Just saying...

Find a friend that hunts first. You need mentors. Gun safety is CRITICAL. Adults are terrible students usually, but this MUST be the priority. Then maybe join a good club. You will know it's good by how serious they are about safety.

Impregnate a girl whose family has a couple thousand acers! Jk
Where are you located. Do you not have any friends or even casual acquaintances that deer hunt?
How much money do you want to are willing to spend each year.?

Start by taking the LDWF hunters safety course. You can do the whole thing online. Then buy your basic and big game hunting licenses, WMA permit, firearm of choice, choose a WMA (ensuring all rules regarding that specific WMA are being followed such as season dates and firearm restrictions etc), and go hunt. Get a paid membership to the onyx app so you can track yourself walking into the woods and if you get lost just follow your tracks back. Show up early AF and if you see or hear someone, go the other way. Tons of public land in louisiana though.

A rifle and a hunting lease with deer on it. Public land is ok but since you want to hunt with a little one, I'd advise you to find a lease for that.

Ask a friend that hunts if you can tag a long for a hunt or two.
Get your friend to explain everything he can think of about hunting (why he picked this stand and location, hunting with the wind, etc)
Go from there.

Start off squirrel or other small game hunting. It has a much easier learning curve than deer hunting. Check and see if there's an active Backcountry Hunters and Anglers chapter in your area. They like introducing folks to hunting.

Buy (2) Mathews phase 4 bows and have them setup and rigged out for whitetail deer hunting and meet me at the south tract tunica hills wma at 4am tomorrow morning. I’ll personally teach and train you how to locate and kill young, tender yearlings off the N3 trail.

Deer Hunting Rule #1:
Hunt land that has deer.

Especially if you have kids to get involved. Squirrel hunting and dove hunting are great ways to get them involved.

Every time one of my sons start dating a new girl the first question I ask is...
"Does her Daddy have any hunting land?"

You live in birmingham? We are the same age. I’ll take you.

I didn't get into hunting until mid 20s once I developed more patience than I had when I was a kid/teen.
As others have mentioned, go make a few hunts with a friend and let them show you the ropes. Youtube helps as well.
For deer hunting, you'll need a rifle/bow/crossbow depending on what type of hunting you want to do. With a bow/crossbow, you can hunt for a much longer period of time on public land -damn near six months.
Be prepared for cold weather. Invest in a good jacket, base layer and boots. Nothing will ruin a hunt more than being unprepared for a cold day in the woods. 40 degrees at your house feels more like 25 in the woods for some reason

Where do you live? I'm sure someone on the board would help. If you are near the West Monroe, LA area, let me know and we can meet up.

Find a mentor. Someone who is older and their children are grown and out of the house.

Do not agree with the idea of hunting public land solo to start out.

Buy a Savage with good quality scope and get used to shooting it. Spend several days at the range until you’re comfortable.
Then book a management buck hunt with an outfitter in TX.

You in Birmingham? Know where Eutaw or Boligee is? I might be able to take you one weekend but probably not until January
