I know you mentioned Traeger, but I am going to say consider the Big Green Egg with the EGG Genius. It gives you the same temperature controls of the pellet grills, and it lets you use the charcoal instead of the pellets.

There is nothing a Traeger can cook that I cannot cook as easy on my BGE.

I bought a can of high heat paint. Touch up my GMG every few months. Other than the paint, it’s been very consistent and great.

GMG does not prep the metal correctly. They paint it with surface rust on the metal. I found out when I sanded mine down. It's very reliable though.

Go Rec Teq if price doesn’t matter. Otherwise get a Pitboss.

Treager is a UT company, therefore, it would behoove me to say something nice about them.

With that preface, they are overpriced.

Another Utah company that makes a nice pellet grill is Camp Chef. Basically all the pellet grills do exactly the same thing.

One thing I dislike with my pitboss xl is the left side opposite of vent (obviously) is significantly cooler than the other side.

The smoke stack is the problem on the bigger units. They tried to make it look like a traeger and it pulls all of the heat to the vent side. I started with a 700 and thought I was upgrading to the Pro series and had the same issue. I removed the smoke stack, blocked off the hole and cut five 3/4" holes across the back and removed the plate at the bottom just like the original. It cooks evenly now with the only hot spot being directly under the fire pot. I have called them on this issue several times and even considered selling it before I just decided to modify it like the original series. That heat pan needs to be stainless but they rather sell parts. The other complaint I have is the heat settings jump in 50* increments instead of 25*. A 325* setting would be great. Who needs a 400* BBQ pit? I see the new grills have a new pid controller. I may look into swapping mine out.

They are legit, and probably overpriced, but I still love mine. Probably my favorite grill I ever had next to my Weber I had years ago.
Some people in this thread said it doesn’t grill, but that ain’t true. I’m constantly grilling burgers, chicken, and sausage on mine.

I noticed you didn't mention steaks. Which is telling and I know why. Big reason I said it sucks as a grill.

You can use it as a grill if you like. I don't prefer smoke on my burgers/sausage etc unless I'm smoking sausage.

If I'm grilling I'm not using my traeger. Personal preference I suppose.

I do steaks on my GMG and they come out well. It goes to 500 or 550. Forget which temp

I didn’t mention steaks because I don’t grill steaks. Both my wife and I prefer to cook them on a cast iron skillet on the stove.

You’ll be able to get higher temps and direct flame with the pit boss adjustable vents for searing steaks and other things. To me it seems like a Swiss Army knife. You can smoke long and slow, or open the vents for direct flame if you want to cook faster. That’s the main reason I chose pit boss.

I picked up one on Craigslist almost brand new about 4 months ago. Came with a smoke tube and cover. So easy to use and versatile. I will say that the legs on it seem a little shaky but we don't move ours so it wasn't (or isn't) an issue.

Cooked pork ribs a number of times, beef ribs once, pork butt a few times and burnt ends out of a point and burnt ends out of pork shoulder. Beef and Chicken fajitas a bunch a times. All came out great. Not very smokey at all without a smoke tube I will say that.

Have a fairly large pit with a connected firebox and it is a pain compared with the Pit Boss grill. My uncle has a Traeger and he loves it. Saw a bunch of great reviews and recommendations for Rec Tec but thought I would give Pit Boss a try since I picked it up so cheap. When this goes I will probably go to a Rec Tec but for now very happy.

Good choice because you aren't getting any sear on a traeger

I'll say it again, traeger sucks as a grill.

Everything I’ve read recently about traeger points to their quality going down hill the past few years. I’m in the market and I recently decided that I will probably get the recteq 590 over the camp chef woodwind 24. Seems like better build quality that will provide many more years of use compared to others in that price point.

Actually with the GMG pizza oven there are sone searing grates to use which would be 800 degrees I think. I don't have the oven though.

Traeger's are great for cooking things that do not require direct heat/searing. Anything except steaks really. They are good for hot dogs, burgers, chicken wings/things/breast and any type of smoking. Whereas you want a quick cook and sear for a steak, I would use gas or charcoal for that.

Discussing searing/grilling while discussing pellet smokers is always telling. If you like to sear, and smoke, then look at the camp chef line. You can sear on the propane searbox on the same unit. It smokes no better or worse than the other brands, but the attached searbox/sidekick is a game changer.

I have a BGE and a Recteq. Having both, I can say the pellet grill has some very distinct advantages. I can add fuel during a long cook, effortlessly. There is almost zero ash to discard with a pellet grill. I can light my pellet grill from anywhere in the world. I can smoke with multitudes of different woods, depending on the meat I'm cooking, and no worry about adding more sticks.

The only thing I can think of, that the BGE has in it's favor, is in the case of a power outage.

I cook steaks a lot. The trick on a pellet grill is to reverse sear. I cook mine slow until they are with 20 degrees of my desired temp. Take them off, and turn the grill all the way up. My grill goes above 500, so when it gets to that point, I put the steaks back on to finish. One of the best steaks I've ever eaten, was done this way recently.

I don't have one. Bought a Pit Barrel Cooker and love it so far. Very simple to use.

I do have several friends that own a Camp Chef Pellet Grill and love them.
