I grew up using charcoal and wood grills, was looking to upgrade with the grill situation and have been looking into wood pellet.

Was wondering if anyone has experience with Traeger, and or Pit Boss. I dont have experience with wood pellet grills, but have liked what I've seen with those two brands.

Is there a huge quality gap between those two brands and how do you feel about WP grills overall for taste and quality?

I’ve owned both and while I do give a slight edge to the Traeger, the pit boss can be had for half the cost and is still very well built. If money isn’t a problem I’d probably go with the Traeger but I feel that overall the Pit Boss offers a better value

Lots of threads on this. Not much difference between the commodity grade pellet smokers. They are all Chinese (even rec teq, despite what their fanboys think). Pick one you like the size and features of and smoke away.

You’ll be able to get higher temps and direct flame with the pit boss adjustable vents for searing steaks and other things. To me it seems like a Swiss Army knife. You can smoke long and slow, or open the vents for direct flame if you want to cook faster. That’s the main reason I chose pit boss.

Traeger customer service was worse then ATT when I had to deal with them a few years ago. Had ordered direct from them. Grill came smashed to start with. Finally got it replaced and if would never stay running. Customer service would say they were doing something like sending something to fix it but it was always a lie. I think they promised a bunch of stuff to get high phone surveys.

take a look at the recteq bullseye. I had a pit boss 1000 xl and liked it but the recteq is on another level for about the same price. Not nearly the cooking area, though.

I have a pit boss xl, I like it. I have no experience with traeger whatsoever though. One thing I dislike with my pitboss xl is the left side opposite of vent (obviously) is significantly cooler than the other side. Also the heat plate does a poor job of properly distributing the heat even somewhat evenly, causing alot of trial and error to learn your heat zones. Another problem is the carbon steel heat plate is miserable at avoiding rust, mine is almost rusted through after 3 years of covered use. Also the paint they used on mine can't handle max heat and burned off on the bottom when searing meats. It sounds like alot of downsides but the upside to it is 100x better than proPAIN and charcoal/wood grills, just gotta learn it.

This site led me to Rec Teq and I have been very happy with it. Family member of mine owns a Pit Boss and has had tons of problems with different components going out. The big drawback to Rec Teq is you can’t just go to a local store and look at one. They ship direct from the company - no dealers.

On the other end of that spectrum is Recteq. Great grills, even better customer service. I've had my 700 for a few months now, and I couldn't be happier. The Green Eggs just collects dust now.

Not sure about the smokers but pellet stove heat kicks arse. I've had pellet stove heaters for years.

They are legit, but overpriced....

Order the RecTeq RT700 and don't look back.

About $1400 all in with some extras....the best cooking device I have EVER owned.

They are both hahaha.

My biggest pain with them is you have to keep them clean to work correctly. The auger needs to be nice and clean, and only use fresh pellets. But once you get it right it really is idiot proof and pretty bad arse

Save the money and get a RecTec or Pit Boss. I bought a Treager right around the time when all of the alternatives were coming out and was worried they wouldn’t hold up or keep temp.

Now several years later, trends seem to show that those will maintain temp and smoke quality just as well for about 1/2 the price and will get hotter in most cases.

If you don't you're also having wood dust blown over your meat.

My only experience with pellet grills is with a traeger. I've had it for 7 years and I haven't had any problems til now. My blower fan went out but supposedly it's an easy swap and the part is 25 buck. So, it has been kind to me.

My neighbor bought one about a year ago after I gave him about half a smoked pork butt I had cooked on my old bullet type smoker and he just had to start smoking.

He came by a few weeks later with some pork butt he smoked for me to try and it had so little smoke flavor it almost tasted like it came out of an oven. Maybe he did something wrong but claimed he had pellets in it the whole time and it was putting out smoke during the cooking process.

My brother-in-law also has one and his smoked meats don't really have a good smoke flavor, and I know he knows how to cook. He recently went with a new smoker and got an offset one this time around.

Personally, I find them overpriced.

Gonna guess he didn't use the smoke setting and wrapped too early.

My wife bought a Traeger. Hated it. Was terrible as a grill. It never got hot enough. It was barely passable as a smoker.

Dumped it and got a Weber.

I have a GMG now which has been very dependable but the paint is kind of crappy. Makes some amazing food.

They call it a grill but it's a POS as a grill. It's my smoker, that's it.

I've got 2 gas grills and a charcoal grill.
