I actually saw one Saturday morning right behind our camp up around Kisatchie/Red Dirt.First time I've ever seen one. He was on our trail sunning himself and slithered into an uprooted pine tree hole.

When lived back east I spent a fair amount of time in the woods, and was paid to traipse around in the pine forests of Eastern NC where they are know to live. We saw all manner of snakes on that job (All sorts of water snakes, racers, Cottonmouth's, Rattle snakes and Copperheads), but I've never seen a coral snake in the wild.

Saw one in red dirt 2 turkey seasons ago.

Didn’t realize they had so many there.

I've seen two alive and one dead on a country road. One alive specimen was crossing a road, I kept on driving. The other was in my back yard in Cypress, Texas. I was cutting the lawn. In the time I went to get a shovel 20 feet away, it had gone under the St Augustine grass or in a crawfish hole. They like to spend their time under stuff and in burrows. That's why they are so difficult to observe. Neighbor in Cypress also saw one.

Sightings and encounters are so rare because the snakes themselves are scarce, but also because they are nocturnal. They are much more active at night than they are in the day.

I have seen two coming out of the woods. Both seen in late evening. From what I have read, they chew and don’t strike. Could be wrong.

The myth that they have to chew (and don't strike) apparently leads to many coral snake bites. People who have heard that myth pick up the snakes and get bitten on the hands or arms. I've also read that many other bites are on hands or arms because people get bitten reaching into areas they can't see.

[link=(Here)]Here[/link] is some info on myths about them.

Saw this one in the road on the day after Laura came through.

Saw one at a friends house on Kincaid lake. Like they said they’re very fast and can disappear in the pine straw with quickness.

Found one in the boat as we were getting ready to go crappie fishing in the afternoon. It was windy and a storm was looking like it was gonna roll in earlier than expected. That was All the reason we needed to not go... And the snake crawled back into the hull somewhere. I had a picture of it to make sure it wasn't the look alike. It was not the look alike. This was in NE Mississippi

Ole baw in N AL picked one up a few years ago being a badass. Last pic I saw of him was tied up to respirators fighting to live.

I saw one in Florida and one at our lease near Belmont Texas. Our lease neighbors wife in Texas was bit by one. The anti-venom caused her to have a heart attack. Nearly died.

They are actually a very common snake in most of their range. It is just extremely rare to see one of you aren’t actively looking for them.

There is a guy on YouTube NKFherping who finds them regularly all across the south.

I have seen 2 or 3 in my life. All in the Austin, TX area around limestone cliffs while climbing. Beautiful snakes.
