There is over 100 calibers that will kill a deer just as good as the next one and work perfectly fine for 99% of the hunters and situations in MS and LA, “needing” a new gun is just “wanting” a new gun and there is nothing wrong with that, use whatever you need to to justify it to yourself

One thing none of y'all are taking into account is how cool the name sounds and is to say. It exudes machismo, accuracy, confidence, and street cred. Boosts testosterone levels as well.

The .17HMR and it’s not even close. This cartridge took small calibers to a whole new level of appreciation and everybody had to have one. Prior to 2003, .17 calibers were pretty much non-existent to the general shooting public. .17 caliber rifles and cartridges have been around since the late 60’s and were only used by “wildcatters” & varmint hunters that hand loaded (see pic below). During it’s peak sales, the .17HMR was chambered by every rifle manufacturer. This cartridge is crazy accurate, fun for kids to shoot, and can be used to hunt squirrel, crows, turkey, and pigs.
17 caliber history: the O’Brien Rifle Company in Las Vegas made various custom .17 caliber rifles from 1968-1971. Research & development was done in the Nevada desert.

Gun makers use new cartridges as a sales and marketing tool. I don’t fault them for that. It’s the nature of the biz.
All of us aspire to own a single gun capable of hunting everything from medium to large size game. At the same time finding it impossible to do so because owning more guns is always more fun. The makers know this too.
Every maker is trying to bring the new hotness to market. Remember the 260 Rem, 7mm STW or the Leverlution hype a decade or more ago? This has been going on for ages.
In my years I’ve never seen a cartridge take off as fast as the 6.5 Creed; nor have I seen one garner as many haters. Don’t own one; but, I’m sure it’s a perfectly capable hunting tool.
When it comes to the 6.5 it’s all about the 6.5-300 IMHO. That being said; it’s way more gun than most hunters will ever need and it’s reloading data was available as early as 1971 when it was winning long range bench-rest competitions across the country.

So which cartridges couldn't do this before the creedmore?
I never said the creedmore was a bad cartridge. It will kill game animals just fine. But it is marketed as some revolutionary new technological wonder that made every other cartridge obsolete. It flat out doesn't do anything BETTER in a hunting situation than cartridges that already existed before it.

People can hate all they want on the 6.5. I own one and love it. I'm older and wanted something fun with less recoil than my other rounds. It all has to do with shot placement (not the neck). Farthest walk to find a south MS deer has been 75 yards for me.

Your hatred of the 6.5 is amazing and your argument that it only cripples deer is similar to a Democrat saying that guns kill people.
The person pulling the trigger is 100% responsible for whatever the bullet does.
Also, in that article it’s comparing a 190gr bullet .308 to the 6.5 creedmoor. Can you show me any current factory produced .308 with 190gr that isn’t a subsonic?
