It's a total mess. There's controversies every single day. Holes in the ice, suspect judging, fake snow, food, housing, Chinese police, pollution, human rights etc etc etc. It wasn't much better during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics either.
The Olympics have become a big money grab and cheat fest.
Countries like China and Russia still think by winning a bunch of medals makes them look powerful to the rest of the world. Unfortunately they have to cheat to do it. Until the IOC changes I don't see it getting better in the future.
It's just lost it's luster for me. It has for some time now but this one just put the nail in the coffin for me.

It doesn't help that the US isn't great at the Winter Olympics to start with. But as of right now the US still has more Golds than both (not) Russia and China.

They'd do a lot better if the athletes that live & train in the US counted towards the US totals

I think people are also suffering from Asian host fatigue. At least i am. It just feels like both the Summer and Winter Olympics have been on the other side of the world in Asia for the last 14 years. Beijing 08', Sochi 14', Pyeongchang 18', Tokyo 20', Beijing 22'...ENOUGH...and then the one city that wasn't in Asia was an absolute shite show in Rio De Janeiro 16'. The Olympics need to get back to more Western Countries and then maybe the games will improve? The time difference with those Asian countries is a huge issue for prime time live viewing. Paris and Los Angeles will see much higher ratings IMO.

I dont remember those being a mess? I know htere were a lot of issues leading up to them but the actual games themselves seemed to go off fine

First I am NOT attempting to apologize for China but they won a bid nobody seemed to want and they have done it on the cheap where others have lost their proverbial shirts. Going cheap on the Olympics is the only way to break even, however, it seems dumb because the only reason to host is to show off and not spending the money to wow the athletes and audience ends up being counter productive. Don't bite off more than you are willing to chew.

Nobody pays any attention to countries that finish outside of even the top 3 unless they are tiny. The ROC will finish outside the top 5 and China outside the top 10 in these games.

There were more that entered initial bids on these Games until the IOC started making ridiculous demands so they pulled their bids. That's how it ended up between China and Kazakhstan. Seems only those two were willing to pay the grifter fees to the IOC officials.

The time difference in Asia leads to fewer spoilers though because they run a lot of super popular events (Swimming and Track in the summer, alpine skiing/figure skating/freestyle snowboard and skiing) live in the US.

In all of the recent Olympics we saw a lot of stuff live in prime time. That won’t be the case in Paris or Milan.

One of the big issues I recall was the level of pollution that the ocean swimming competitors had to deal with...basically they were swimming in shite...

But yeah, the games appeared to go fairly well.

For who? They have a hard time getting nations to bid on the Olympics anymore, they lose millions upon millions on the Olympics.

Not only the Olympics being in backwoods places on the other side of the globe, we've also been subject to the other major 4 year event (World Cup) being in Kangaroo countries the last 12+ years -- South Africa, Brazil, Russia and Qatar this year

What a shitshow it would have been if Kazakhstan had gotten the bid, withe the president deposed and the country under martial law enforced by Russian "peacekeepers."

That's an ironic criticism of the Olympics.
