Will this be a good excuse to open up spill ways and divert the Miss river into the marshes more?
read yesterday that we were considering this option as well to run water through mobile bay...no idea if this has started yet or not. maybe our governor is out raiding bingo parlors?

Anyone who understands the situation laughs out loud at someone like you who has no understanding.
You also could care less about trying to understand.

If that worked at all, it wouldn't last 3 months, and the folks upstream would have something to say about it.

my guess is that they're waiting to see if the oil gets past SW Pass first.

I grew up hunting and fishing in those marshes. I don't understand what happend or why it happend. I do understand that a disaster of unimaginable consequences is baring down on the Louisiana coast. I also understand that there are many smart people working on this. The problem is that because south Louisiana is marshland, Louisiana essentially has THOUSANDS of miles of coast line and that coast line is incredibly fragile. I've seen the manpower it takes to clean up spills in the river, extrapolating that makes me nausceous.

In all seriousness, shouldn't the 101st and 82nd Airborne be depolyed into the marshes to help with clean-up?
What exactly do you think they can do? You need equipment to clean this mess up. Equipment that they have no clue of how to operate.

so, can anyone gives this IT nerd in the oil/gas industry a summary of what's the worst that could happen?
not that i am downplaying the situation

Dumb question, would it do any good to open up the spillway? I am assuming the river is still pretty high, so any little bit of outflow from the lake areas might help?

Total devastation of our wetlands/marshes.... And my crabbing trip to grand isle in August will probably be ruined

the shoals off the coast that serve as incubation habitats for the crabs will most definitly be devistated if this mess sits over them for any period of time

quote:Stop exaggerating. It's not the end of life as we know it. Don't allow yourself to be whipped into a frenzy by the media, alarmists, and uninformed folks. Most of the spill area is just a sheen. It's little more than a discolortion on the surface of the water. Which is nothing like a slick. That's what we think of when we hear "oil spill". That's free phase oil floating on top of the water. That constitutes very little of the spill area. None of it is near shore.
I do understand that a disaster of unimaginable consequences is baring down on the Louisiana coast.

Elaborate please because the local fisherman they've interviewed have acted like they will have to permanently move, not be out of business for just a year.

Davis Pond and Caernarvon freshwater diversions on the Mississippi River have been opened
As suggested yesterday in this thread. Maybe somebody in the Capitol is reading? p. 16

At least then they can reopen Canaervon. That might flush some of it out.

My take on the whole thing is Louisiana should be getting more revenues from the oil/gas activity off our coast. This would allow us to better respond to these situations and make it worth our while to allow the activity.
We should not allow any more activity off our coast until we get at least 38% of all revenues that now go to the federal government. Until then frick any activity if this is the response and burden we have to bear.
Tell them to drill in Florida and California or give us more money If not GFY.

Pentagon allows use of C-130 cargo planes equipped with spray equipment for treatment of spill.
Where have these things been up to this point is my question?

davis pond and caenarvon have capacities in the neighborhood of 10,000 cfs. the river's flow right now is probably around 800,000 cfs. opening them up (while better than doing nothing) is just like pissing on a house fire to put it out. doubt it does much.
