Best comment on a CNN article:
I cant fathom how dumb the folks who tagged this with a "like" must be. Let's review...the BOP is a 48 foot tall, 400-ton device, and this overpressure spike went right past it, through 8,000 ft of water, and annihilated the rig at the surface. Yep...just clamp the pipe. That'll fix it.

I read or heard there are 7 other rigs "like" this one that exploded. Are they speaking of rigs that are in very deep water or structured like this one? or both?
There are facilities similar to this one, but I'm not sure about the number of them, and I'm not sure if they were manufactured by the same company for TO or not. There are also drill ships (think of a cruise ship converted into a drilling rig).
As far as total rigs that are deepwater, I have no clue. Maybe someone like FederalTiger might have some info on this?
I know that I've personally been on 5 deepwater platforms for various operators.
I hope that answers your questions, somewhat.

If the cap and funnel system does not work (supposed to be implemented within the week) what is the next step? Is there anything else that can be tried short of drilling a new relief well?

Here is a good article in CNN about the attempts to shut off the well. The illustration on the left hand side of the page is actually a video that when clicked on goes through the various scenarios to fix this problem...in answering my own question above, from this article, it seems as though if the hood does not work, it may be three or more months before the leak is stopped.

Here is a map maintained by rodnreel.com that shows the current location of all deepwater floaters and drill ships. Deepwater Horizon is number 8, which is partially overwritten by number 7, which is a drill ship Discoverer Enterprise.
Here is the URL to the page that shows the legend for all the names of the other rigs on this map.
