I'm hoping no news is good news. My contact had a very long day so I suspect he's in the rack.

It does look like it's coming out at higher volume or pressure now which I would assume means one of two things if that observation is true?
1. It didn't work and in fact fricked it up much worse.
2. It worked and what we're seeing is the pressure from the pumps and the mud no longer going down the well but now coming out the pipes directly.
Lets hold our breath and pray for 2.

We will see mud blowing back until the combined weight of the mud in the flowline and in the wellbore over come the flowing tubing pressure of the formation

just taking a guess but I imagine it would come out the pipe before it even started going down the well

what time did they start?

I'm no driller and have no knowledge about the "MUD" but if it hase any granular characteristics at all, after shooting through the kinks for a while it will erode the opennings over time. This may be causing the change in flow.

If "Top Kill" fails, could it make the overall situation worse. Kind of like a backfire?

i wouldn't think that it could be eroding the pipe worse than oil flowing uncontrolled out of those holes

the one thing i know about leaks -- they get worse.

Well I don't think the oil and gas were eroding it very much.........sand or something like it couold potentially erode it much faster......whether that comes from the formation or the MUD?

a coarser substance would erode it faster.
on another note, tuning back in for the first time since 2 pm, looks like more is flowing out, can someone give me an update.

Don't panic. It has cleared now and it looks about the same. Just go to bed and check it in the morning.

if my calculations are right it looks like they should have pumped nearly 30,000 bbls of mud by now. I believe the bp rep said they had about 50,000 bbls on hand. any idea how much would be needed for this operation?
also, anyone know what pressure the pump is injecting the mud at? is it possible that the well has been killed already and what we are seeing coming out of the hole is due to just the pumps?

Company official Kent Wells said yesterday that BP staff will begin testing to see if they can actually inject mud at each of the five entry points that could be used in the top kill.
This is prolly what we are seeing now. Will they be able to isolate the riser so they can pump downhole? They are looking at 40 -50 BPM. Rate won't matter if it's all going up instead of down.

Not coarse at all
they don't use sand or any other coarse materials in drilling mud that would defeat the lubricity they need

I think they said up to 65 barrels per minute
