Easy. I saw the conference, which was several hours ago. He was merely saying that they had established mud flow as best they could tell. He was absolutely NOT saying that the well was under control and that they could stop pumping.

I cannot get over how the reporters working this story fail to get the most basic facts right, and how they blow the wrong facts completely out of proportion. I am going to take my blood pressure medicine and go to bed.

I read one account of the events leading up to the accident that said that workers ignored warning signs 50 minutes prior to the explosion and resumed drilling. Now I'm certainly no expert but I did work in the oil patch a bit. It was my understanding that this well was being completed; in fact they had just cemented the casing. So why the hell would they be drilling?

By the way, I just ran some rough calculations and came up with a lower bound of 5700 ft for the size of the mud column to equalize the pressure.

I know Judge ... I just hadn't heard that and linked it as I knew that someone would ask. I'm still praying!

Dear God:

I ain't always been the best of the lot. But I haven't asked for much, either. This one's important, God. Please.

Are you adding in 2100 psi boost from seawater at that depth?

No, add the hydrostatic pressure of the 5000 feet of water above the wellhead.

Dear God:

One more thing. Please let Mountain Tiger add in the hydrostatic of the seawater. Amen.

I think you do. The wellbore is open to the sea. That means if you had a column pressure of 2100 at the top of the BOPs, the well should be static. Less than that, and seawater would flow into the well.

I think it cancels out. I didn't add it in when I calculated the formation pressure so I don't think I need to subtract it when I calculate the size of the mud column.

Dear God:

I know you're quite busy but I'd appreciate an answer before my fluid mechanics exam tomorrow.

Did they seal off the top of the riser insertion tool? Seems like the would have to. Would it make any sense to pump, ever so gently, down through that tool?
