The problem with a zipper merge is that all value of it goes away with the first car that has to stop to look for an opening to come in.
Now the window needed is even wider to squeeze in, causing even more of a disruption and reduced flow.
It’s one of those things that only works when everyone is on the same page.
If they aren’t, it’s inferior.
So basically it’ll be handy when most cars are self driving, but for now, it’s just a rationalization for drivers who want to speed in the front and get pissed room isn’t made for them at the very front, not even attempting to merge while moving.

Most mother frickers have no clue how to merge on the interstate. They think you pussyfoot on the on ramp at about 45 MPH and the person in the right lane is supposed to move over or slam on their brakes to allow you in.
The goal is to merge at roughly the same speed as traffic and slightly speed up or slow a tad to work yourself into the natural flow of traffic.

I'd say it's all Americans...in particular the ones driving entry level Mercedes or altimas, or really any vehicle with the glitter license plate frames -- they are never letting anyone in under any circumstance.

I always 100% of the time speed past people that stack up in one lane even if I have to use the shoulder. Why? Because some sucker will always let me in.
Funny story…I was going this once, along with others, and some Karen tried to wedge over to block us. I squeezed in the gap behind her eventually pushing her out of line and nobody would let her back in.

It depends
If the lane is ending I am a big proponent of the zipper merge.
The problem to me is people trying to use the methodology when/where it doesnt apply; like when their lane isn't ending but rather becomes a turn lane. That's not the time to expect a zipper merge.

On a recent multi-state road trip, I saw something I’d never seen before. A construction zone had signs that read “Use both lanes - stay in lane until merge zone”. Then, there was a clearly marked “merge zone” in the final 50 yards or so. It was great. Probably triggered a lot of people in the non-merging lane but oh well. Hopefully this becomes commonplace.

What's really fricking galling is the number of trucks that will not do it and the number who will ride the center line and block both lanes for miles before a backup.
