All conspiracy theories accepted

YouTube is quietly preparing to launch a podcast player, and is repositioning to better fit that market.

Accordingly, the Google Podcasts app has had no feature updates for the last 18 months, and the play buttons previously linking to the service have been removed from Google search.

Like how they make you pay to let it stream in the background? Hence you use it less unless you pay?

I don't know what changed, but I have been able to stream in the background for a while now...

Older videos likely have less ad revenue potential. And some hotshot MBA/Bean Counter probably put together some nice little PowerPoint about how they could potentially drive up annual ad revenue by 4% or some shite if they remove the ability to search target older videos. Steering customers away from video content when ads either weren’t implemented or content was less likely to be built around incorporating it. Probably with the secondary benefit of pushing content creators to constantly add more stuff since it will now be even harder to find older content

Wow this is it. Very plausible explanation.

Advertising, mostly.

They've also automated everything to the point of frustration and running creators off the platform onto tik tok and facebook shorts. You can't have naughty words at all anymore to remain monetized, nor gore in video game content. You literally have to censor newscasts that mention the words rape, sex, or violence because of their algorithm and strict policies on content.

Essentially youtube wants to become PG by years end.

I know this is a simple comment that people understand and I have no idea the political views of those who actually make decisions about youtube, but its worth $180B.

They probably have one of the better streaming services so yeah, they can afford to take some chances.

I get a lot of YouTube entertainment and don’t pay for it, so I can’t complain.

If you haven't noticed, "the customer is always right" mentality died years ago. YouTube is basically a monopoly, and monopolies don't care what you think.

That’s not quite the problem.

The problem is that we’re not the customers. We’re actually the product from Alphabet’s perspective.

I pay for YouTube premium. Haven't seen an add in months other than the in video sponsors that I'll Ff through. If you watch a lot of YouTube it's worth the $11 a month.

I don't understand why people would pay for something you can get for free. Something better you can get for free actually. Lot of people in this thread should Google sponsor block. Works better than the service you're paying for.

Premium allows you to download vids and watch offline as well as watch in the background like a podcast and with screen off. Both are very useful to me. I travel and listen to long format content like Lex Fridman.

Everything eventually goes to sh*t man. Deal with it.

Seriously, there are lots of dummies in the world. Cord cutting sent a lot of them to YouTube. I think companies like them have to dumb down their product for the dummies. One of their own experts probably suggested the change, thinking it will only affect people that need the site too much to quit using it. They can use the small amount of money saved to promote how easy their app is to use for the dummies.

Same. I watch way more youtube than any other streaming service. Now when a friend tries to show me a video and ads start playing I run away screaming

Yeah. Really burns me up. Someone has a channel with hundreds of videos, you have to scroll through them all now to get to beginning.
