That’s usually the case 90% of the time, at least in public elementary/middle schools.

My goal with my daughter and niece is to prepare them as best I can for life after school. So if part of our time spent together is figuring out a homework assignment, then I'll help them figure out the homework assignment. It's still time well spent in my eyes.

Oh, it’s anything but fine. Unless there is a major overhaul to the system soon, it’s doomed. Everything stated publicly as a standard is nonsense. The bar has been lowered to ground level, and more and more kids simply refuse to step over it. They fully understand that they will be passed on anyway, so why even make the effort to step over the bar.

I have cousins my age in Germany. They were finished with school by noon and had just as long of summers as we did.

As a teacher, that’s my philosophy for middle schoolers. The exception would be 10-15 minutes studying for a test the night before.

That is an American parent in 2023. Friends with kids, not parents. Welcome to the decline.

Do their kids sleep for 12 hours? Need to go back to school to learn how many hours there are in a day.

What you do during the day will make you some money, but what you do for homework will make you rich.

Good grief, if you want your kids to be successful you have to teach them good study habits when they're young.

It's a cute meme that may get some traction among parent in free public schools, but you're doing them a great disservice preparing them for college. Professors are notorious for testing students on material that was never mentioned in class, but only found in some reading list.

Apathetic parents, standardized testing, and no child left behind are much, much, much, muuuuucccchhhh bigger problems than homework.

I didn’t know homework was still a thing. Our kids have long term assignments like papers due weeks or even months out but there is plenty of time to get all work done during the school day.

don't see how you can look at our current educational system, compare it to the rest of the developed world, and think it's perfectly fine.

There is a direct causation with the establishment of the Department of Education and the destruction of education in this country. Use to be, we had a good record amongst our peer-countries.

I’m not shocked at the amount of homework, but I look at the dept of Ed.‘s record and think, are these comprehensive exams even needed? I’m sure we can cut some bullshite out for adding in basic budgeting/accounting, basic navigation skills (urban and rural) basic firearms training, and other useful life skills.

I mean, are four English courses in high school really needed? I do not use any of the English novels I was “supposed” to read in everyday life. Instead of forcing young boys to read classics, have them read subjects and do book reports on shite that actually interest them. Book reports on mechanics, cars, aircraft, tractors, firearms, or businesses.

It’s no wonder adhd is diagnosed through the roof. Those kids are bored out of their minds.

It’s going to take an extremely strong, visionary, president to take on the teachers of this nation to change how we educate our teachers. Teachers should have life experiences before becoming teachers. What does a 23 yr old teacher know about the real world?

Controversial opinion: kids in America need to be doing more homework, not less. They are in increasingly direct competition with kids around the world who are grinding way harder.

I sort of agree with the post. 3rd grade was a ton of busywork. Most homework was just a completion grade, it was stuff like study guides, writing out spelling or vocab words. It wasn't actually graded.

My kid made a 100 on every spelling test, a 100 on every pop quiz, even came in 2nd for his grade in the spelling bee, but forgot to turn in a word search one week and it almost dropped his grade a full letter. He had a 0 for the homework that week and I forget what percentage of the grade it was supposed to be.

Are we wanting them to learn how to spell or learn how to do a word search? He has the spelling part down, he just hates menial tasks that add no value. A friend of mine said it was the same thing with his son. Straight A's on all his tests, but a 0 for a homework grade one week and it drops him to a B for the quarter. He did the work, just forgot to turn it in. I think if you turn it in late you can get half credit, but after 1 day, even if it is turned in, automatic 0 for that assignment.

We need to replace memorization and teaching to the test with a primary emphasis on critical thinking skills.

For some yeah… but for most of us we just don’t have time when both parents work and there’s shite to do at home. We get home and don’t stop until 10PM
