Busy waiting for reparations from systemic racism and medical tyranny. Don't worry, squinty Biden will whisper something shortly from his handlers.

Trying to encourage? If they want people back they should tell them that coming back is mandatory. If the cry baby employees don't like it, pound sand and GTFO.

I love this mindset.

If you want to employ talented people, there has to be some sort of give and take. Of course they are allowed to demand whatever they want. In return employees can seek employment elsewhere.

This hardass line of “if you don’t like it GTFO” is not realistic in most industries.

To be incredibly clear, employers should not simply cater to employees. They provide a salary for work performed. But employment is 100% a two-way street if the employee has the ability to seek other options.

At 8:30pm I receive an email from my boss asking about a project. I do not answer the email because, as instructed, I am no longer allowed to work from home.

I am then fired the next day because the email was time sensitive for a client and I did not respond.

Seems reasonable.
This is a bullshite scenario. First of all you are salaried, there are no hours. You work until the job is done. Even if it's from offsite. If you don't like it, find another job.

Besides, in your scenario you should have enough awareness that some critical customer situation is looming and you may need to make yourself available after hours. And you can drive into the office to respond (to "follow instructions"). If you lack this awareness and results focus, then maybe you should be cut loose.

Why are you putting after hours in quotations?

I work after hours as well, it’s the nature of my job

But there are labor laws…after hours is not a subjective term

Quit, and stop bitching about it.

I will. I audit municipalities for a living, and the ones I work on are required by law to be audited. Barring complete societal collapse and literally no one having a job, I'm going to be employed and the companies that want me are still going to have need of someone like me.

I don't understand why companies are pussyfooting with this. If you want your workforce in the office than tell your employees show up or resign.

I wouldn’t. My phone would be off and all emails would have an auto reply.

Many have been working remotely for 3 years now. Things have changed. It’s cut down on costs for companies and saving jobs.

If they try and bring people back in that have performed well working remote, then they’ll likely see quite a bit of turnover.

I’ll never go back to 5 days in a cube 8-5.

If the job/tasks are being completed timely it shouldn’t matter. Especially if someone has a family/kids they have to tend to for work life balance.

i'm actually more on the anti-wfh side but it's pretty funny how riled up these questions get some people. lots of people seem overly proud of their exempt status.

I find it funny when people say things like the statement above but then question why they get passed over for promotions. Individuals with this mindset maybe make it to middle management, but not often have I seen employees with this mentality make it beyond that; save for nepotism.

Not saying there's anything wrong with it. Every organization has to have B players.

Good for you, company man.

Exactly, my grandfather worked hard all his life so that his grandchildren would have the privilege of working hard. Not something so stupid as to have a better life.

He also risked his life in WWII for trans rights and unlimited third world migration to this country. Thank God the good guys won.

Depends on who is asking for what. I have a lot of freedom so if I work some after hours I make it up. Company has been good to me so I don't mind keeping the things going that need attention after I leave. Now when they become clock watchers or the freedom disappears, I will work when they pay me and not a minute more. I don't see the need to cause an issue with a mutually beneficial thing.

Very true, however...

You also have to look out for #1. There's a point where the company is just pushing you around, and if you take it, you've shown them you are a push-over and it will continue.

I know, the perfect solution is to find a new job that better suits your needs, but that can be a tough call, you never really know until you take that new job, and it might not turn out as you expected, and you just invested a lot of time and effort to get nowhere.

My sister-in-law is facing this, and she's pushing back. She doesn't really have much personal interaction with the other people at her work, she's got an hour+ commute each way. She's been doing the job from home for 2+ years. She told them if she has to come in, they are losing 3 hours of work from her each day. She has no problem working her commute time, either way, she has the same free time at home, but she'd rather be working and producing something than sitting on and waiting for a train/bus.
