re: WTF, Random Drug Testing in High School

It's been happening for years.
I've told this story before...
My mom is a really cool lady. When I got to high school they sent forms home to get parents permission to drug test. The next day basically all get turned in but mine. The teacher asked me about it and I said she wouldn't sign. It's a violation of my privacy. She laughed and said have it here tomorrow. This went on for about 3 days and she finally sends me to the principals office.
He asks, and again I say she wouldn't sign. It's a violation of my privacy. He says we'll just see about that. He tells me to sit down and cuts on the speaker phone and calls the house. My mom answers and he says, "Mr. Tipton has informed us that you refuse to sign. Are you even aware of the situation?"
My mom starts tearing him a new one and he quickly picks up the phone. I can hear my mom getting irate and all he says is "Yes ma'am. Yes ma'am. I understand. Okay"
He hangs up the phone and says go back to class.
I continued to play sports and never once got tested.

I thought a parent had to give consent for a minor to be tested??

It will probably be included as an implied consent phrase in the implementing years code of conduct/guidelines.

I was drug tested in HS routinely as an athlete, I never failed, nor had a problem peeing.
For the kids who have shy bladders, they took a hair off their scalp.. that always seemed a bit fricky to me.

My senior year the football team had to take one a week before the first game... I’m pretty sure most of us failed... the results were never even brought up... never heard anything else about it

I like it.
Being proactive and treating the problem before if gets so bad that our health care system is further overloaded with drug addicted youths and adults. It's a huge strain on the insurance system as well paying out for all these future addicts treatments and medical cost. that cause es everyone insurance to go up and becomes an unfair strain on the pockets of non drug addicted people having to basically foot the bill.
Kinda like the fatty's and smokers. Us healthy people should not have to pay for other people poor life choices. Catch them early and either make them change or weed (no pun intended) them out of the system.

At the school (private, not Catholic) my kids go to, there is like a 4 strike system and there is space in between tests for the first three strikes. So, if you have not failed any by mid junior year, you can pretty much have at it. When they put the testing in two years ago, I made the point to the Dean that they are just pushing the experimental phase out of high school and into college when parents have less control. But the decision to test was already made. Alas.
