Goes to show how selfish suicide is. Did this guy not think that his wife might call and bother you? /sarcasm

Phone rang, I answered. Lady was crying.

So I perk up at the desk and listen. Sobbing uncontrollably. Her husband committed suicide. She's trying to get the bank because she can no longer afford what they have.

I calmly explain I'm just some guy. Not the bank.

She doesn't hang up and keeps crying.

I made some attempt at consolation, and realized half a word in nothing I could say would make one damned bit of difference.

Trailed off after "ma'am". Wasn't sure what to say. Couldnt hang up on a crying woman. So I sat there in limbo until she realized her error and hung up.

It was a... wierd feeling.

When I was a kid I answered the phone to a family who wanted to speak with their daughter. Apparently she played a lot of jokes on people so they didn’t believe me when I kept telling them I wasn’t her.

For some reason I couldn’t just hang up on them, so I listened to this whole family talk about how much they missed “me.” I told them again for like the 10th time, very sternly, and finally they got the hint. The mom Yelled at me for impersonating her daughter and was all mad, but the Dad and other kids took my side and told her I did tell them it wasn’t their daughter. She apologized and started crying again. This whole thing lasted about 20 min. One of the weirdest life experiences I’ve ever had.

Thanks for taking care of Mrs Pimp.

Things are weird here, it’s pretty hot , but I’m having lunch with Idi Amin and the guy who invented Boy Bands, so it’s ok I guess.

I realize you're all making jokes, but in all seriousness, what can you say in those situations...

She lost her husband right before Christmas for frick's sake.

I've seen better bereaved widows in the quad at LSU.

You think he sat around thinking up that story?

That sounds horrible. Can't imagine what that would be like. Especially this time of year.

I'll give you this, that's a pretty original one. How long did it take you to come up with that?

You did the right thing; in many instances just listening helps.

For something like this it maybe 20-30 minutes if not longer. Gather a little info with open ended questions.

Build a rapport and then try to find help.

Using person centered dialogue or Karl Rogers therapy works well bc you are focusing on the person
