Phone rang, I answered. Lady was crying.

So I perk up at the desk and listen. Sobbing uncontrollably. Her husband committed suicide. She's trying to get the bank because she can no longer afford what they have.

I calmly explain I'm just some guy. Not the bank.

She doesn't hang up and keeps crying.

I made some attempt at consolation, and realized half a word in nothing I could say would make one damned bit of difference.

Trailed off after "ma'am". Wasn't sure what to say. Couldnt hang up on a crying woman. So I sat there in limbo until she realized her error and hung up.

It was a... wierd feeling.

Did she ask for a phone halo of protection?

Seriously, that stinks for her. I would try to be gracious and encouraging.

Props to you for listening. The easy thing to do would have been to hang up.

She sounded in her 50s-60s and black. But I assume so.

Helluva way to change your day...

You could tell her age and race through her sobs? What a talent.

Sounds like she’s on the rebound and emotionally vulnerable. Only one thing to do.
