My sister and brother in law both have PhDs in physics from Harvard and don't use "doctor" at all other than in academic settings. They're incredibly down to earth.

On the other hand, I have a buddy whose wife has a PhD in nutrition from a state school who absolutely insists she be called doctor socially. They recently got married and all of the wedding stuff was "Mr and Dr". She even signed a Facebook post "Mr and Dr", seems incredibly weird to me.

No, I don't refer to anyone as doctor outside of their professional setting. Only a douche would expect someone to refer to them as doctor in a casual setting. It's a boomer/minority thing.

My wife is a doctor, I have several friends who are doctors, and I've only seen one of them use their title in a non work setting, he was young and a douche at the time, I don't think he would do it now (this was about 10 years ago).

He hasn’t been licensed since 2006 though.

The license is irrelevant, the title "doctor" is an educational title

This isn't a new thing. There have always been some people with a doctorate that insist on being called doctor.

Nothing new here.

Curious if she addresses our military personnel by their ranks too?

My BIL is an officer in the Navy, i don’t even know his rank but regardless if I did, I’d still call him by his first name

Depends on the setting. In an educational setting yes, in a clinical setting no.

I don't even call medical doctors "Dr.", unless they are my doctor and I'm in their office.

That is Master Plumber Jones, buddy.

Titles are for CVs.

I do know a good number of my undergrad profs socially post-graduation and there were a couple of older legendary ones I always referred to as Dr. Jones or Dr. Dooley out of respect but they have been gone for years now.

Only time I do this is when someone refers to themselves as Doctor Jones or whatever ever. Then I ask what kind and I reply so do you tell them you’re a doctor when their is an emergency on a plane

My wife has a JD; she thinks its absurd to be called Dr. if you dont have an MD.

My parents both have PhDs in their fields and get embarrassed when someone calls them Dr outside their work environment.

My inlaws are MDs. They don't like to be called doctor outside of work unless they run into a patient at walmart. And they dont think anyone without an MD deserves to be called doctor anywhere. Their favorite thing to do when they meet a PhD is ask real nicely, "Oh where did you go to med school? We went to LSU Shreveport!.....OH, okay, well good."

My buddies wife got a PhD in english lit and wanted to be called Dr., but said its OK to use her first name since we were all friends - like call her Dr. Melissa when we're hanging out at the Prop Stop and shite. Guess who doesn't get called anymore to do a damned thing at all?

No, and if she was a dick about it, I'd ask her to call me CPA to point out how stupid it is.

we have doctors(real ones,) on call that we can get on sat phone if we have a medical emergency, but we learned long ago to ask if there is a physician on board as opposed to a doctor, when an English prof answered the page one time as being a "doctor" when a passenger was having an apparent heart attack
